A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas.  The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. The more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005. And Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

In October 1993, Dark Horse Comics took us deeper into the Star Wars universe with Tales of the Jedi. The epic drama Star Wars was said to have happened “long ago, in a galaxy far away.” In that same galaxy, but even longer ago, lies the tale of the Jedi Knights. That was a time of peace, forged by the vast confederation of star systems known as the Galactic Republic. The Galactic Republic was a democracy, famed for its wise and fair leadership. When danger threatened, it also could call on its protectors, the Jedi Knights. Against the Dark Side, these heroic warriors fought for the cause of good, using their lightsabers and the power of the Force.

Now… a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Tales of the Jedi – The Freedon Nadd Uprising! Everyone knows the story of the last Jedi Knight, Luke Skywalker. But 4000 years before this solitary hero battled to save the universe the Jedi were a wandering tribe of peacekeepers maintaining the balance against the dark side of the Force. This is the story of one such warrior, young Jedi Ulic Qel-Droma, as he battles the dark side power of Freedon Nadd to save the planet Onderon from being swallowed by evil!

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Freedon Nadd Uprising”, These are the recondite histories of the ancient order of Jedi Knights, as recorded in the crystalline recesses of the Jedi Holocron. The period four thousand years before the birth of Luke Skywalker marked a turning point in the history of the Galactic Republic. During that time, two young Jedi became respected throughout the galaxy for their heroic exploits in great battles with the dark side of the Force. Their names were Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider. We take up an early chapter in their saga on the planet Onderon, a world long-divided into warring tribes. Following the death of Queen Amanoa of Iziz, her daughter Galia has ascended to the throne, sharing power with her husband, the Beast-Lord Oron Kira. For a time it seemed that Jedi Master Arca and his three Jedi apprentices (Ulic, his brother Cay Qel-Droma, and Tott Doneeta) had succeeded in bringing peace to divided Onderon. But many Onderonians still worship the memory of Freedon Nadd, a dark Jedi who ruled the planet centuries earlier. Joining with mutinous officers of Onderon’s royal military, the Naddists are staging violent protests inside the great walled city of Iziz. Queen Galia’s new government is already on the verge of collapse…

While attempting to move the sarcophagi of Freedon Nadd and Queen Amanoa to the moon of Dxun, Jedi Knights Arca Jeth, Ulic Qel-Droma, Cay Qel-Droma, Tott Doneeta and Oss Wilum are attacked by several hundred Naddists, led by Warb Null, invading Iziz from underground. While distracting the Iziz forces, a group of Naddists are able to snatch the sarcophagi and take it back with them underground. Master Arca, Ulic and Queen Galia consult Galia’s ailing father, King Ommin, for assistance. However, they are confronted by the spirit of Freedon Nadd, and Ommin betrays his seemingly immobile state by attacking Master Arca, knocking him unconscious. Warb Null comes in and attacks Ulic, but is soon bested and killed by the young Jedi. Unfortunately, this gives Ommin the time he needs to kidnap Master Arca. Meanwhile, on Ossus, Nomi Sunrider, Dace Diath, Shoaneb Culu, Kith Kark and Qrrrl Toq are chosen to defend Iziz in the forthcoming Second Battle of Onderon. On Coruscant, heirs to the Empress Teta system royalty and members of the Dark Side cult the Krath, Satal and Aleema Keto, enter the Galactic Museum and find a fascinating Sith book. Satal steals it while the curator isn’t looking, and, after seeing a news report on the Sith practitioners still active in Iziz, the Ketos fly to Onderon to find said practitioners and discover the secrets of their new book.

Finally in issue #2, “Initiates of the Sith”, Determined to uproot Sith magic from Onderon, Jedi Master Arca orders the sarcophagi of Queen Amanoa and dark Jedi Freedon Nadd removed to the Dxun moon. But the followers of Freedon Nadd launch and unexpected attack from beneath the miles-deep city of Iziz. During the assault, Master Arca is felled by a blow of dark Force – allowing the Naddists to succeed in capturing the royal sarcophagi. As he recovers, Arca learns from Queen Galia that her father King Ommin is being kept alive in a secret life-support facility. Suspicious, Arca visits the dying old man with Galia and Jedi Knight Ulic Qel-Droma at his side. There, Arca’s suspicions are confirmed when the spirit-avatar of long dead Freedon Nadd appears – Ommin is his follower! The crippled old King lashes out at Arca with blistering bolts of dark side energy, subduing the Jedi Master! Ulic Qel-Droma tries valiantly to stop King Ommin from capturing Arca when Warb Null, a dark Jedi warrior, intervenes. Ulic narrowly defeats Null in a deadly lightsaber duel, but not before Ommin escapes with Master Arca as his prisoner. Realizing that he and his fellow Jedi are outmatched by the Naddists, Ulic calls for assistance from the Galactic Republic and the coalition of Jedi Knights.

Satal and Aleema Keto arrive on Onderon to find a massive battle taking place. Their ship, the Krath Enchanter, crashes, but the young Ketos are able to escape with their lives. Meanwhile, the Jedi task force from Ossus, led by Nomi Sunrider, battles their way through Sith war droids and Naddists. Kith Kark is killed in the assault, as the rest of the Jedi infiltrate the royal palace, meeting up with Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma, Tott Doneeta and Oss Wilum. Meanwhile, the Ketos are greeted by King Ommin, hoping to unlock the mysteries of their stolen Sith tome. Ommin gives Satal an amulet, with which he can read the book perfectly, as Arca Jeth is hung on the wall, suffering under deadly Sith magic. Out in the battlefield, Cay Qel-Droma has his prosthetic arm cut off by a war droid, which he quickly dispatches of with his organic arm. The group of seven Jedi arrive at King Ommin’s stronghold, and Ulic slices off the former King’s armature, sending him tumbling to the ground limply. Victorious, the forces of Iziz soon transport the sarcophagi of Freedon Nadd, Queen Amanoa and now King Ommin to Dxun, to forever be laid to rest.
