StarCraft is a military science fiction media franchise created by Chris Metzen and James Phinney and owned by Blizzard Entertainment. The series, set in the beginning of the 26th century, centers on a galactic struggle for dominance among four species the adaptable and mobile Terrans, the ever-evolving insectoid Zerg, the powerful and enigmatic Protoss, and the godlike Xel’Naga creator race in a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy known as the Koprulu Sector. The series debuted with the video game StarCraft in 1998. It has grown to include a number of other games as well as eight novelizations, two Amazing Stories articles, a board game, and other licensed merchandise such as collectible statues and toys.
And now, Dark Horse Comics presents, “StarCraft: Scavengers”. Writer Jody Houser and artist Gabriel Guzman join forces for StarCraft, a new series further exploring the expansive universe of Blizzard’s hit game. A group of terran space scavengers hope to pull off the job of their lifetimes, pillaging a derelict Protoss ship… but the salvage operation goes horribly wrong when the terran space scavengers end up being tormented by an unseen, lethal monster.
Story (Spoilers!)
In issue #1, Aboard the Magpie, a Kel-Morian Combine salvage vessel, Caleb spoke with his old friend Kyra who brought him on the ship. They met with their leader, Captain Theban, who told them they plan to salvage a Protoss ship, a risky act due to the treaty between the Terran Dominion and Daelaam, but also a very profitable one. The entire crew agreed to help in the operation. After the meeting, Theban took Kyra aside, asking if they could trust Caleb enough to bring him into their United Earth Directorate sympathizer movement, though Kyra expressed some uncertainty.
The group boarded the ship, breaking through one of the hatches. They reflected on the war between the Protoss and Zerg, and the level of Protoss technology. Theban revealed that his true goal was a Protoss gunnery power cell, capable to generating a massive beam, and which they would loot for themselves. As they worked on the power cell, Orry and her team discovered a sealed hatch, and after breaking in are engulfed in a blinding light, able to just barely see movement in it. Orry ran and attempted to radio Theban, but tripped, and was attacked by an unknown assailant. Her blood spattered on the wall.
Next in issue #2, After Orry and Vince were killed by a mysterious attacker, Captain Theban ordered his scavengers to stay sharp and told Caleb and Kyra they were not leaving without he weaponry power cell. They eventually discovered it, finding the device with power still flowing through it, and Caleb began disconnecting it. Meanwhile, other scavengers continued to be picked off by the cloaked attacker, with Mason being killed when he encountered Orry’s corpse.
Caleb disconnected the power cell and placed it in a storage cube, and the scavengers were ordered to regroup. Meanwhile, the assailant picked off members of the other group, taking Sharon. Theban ordered that the group return to the Magpie and said that whatever was on the ship would kill them all if they tried to face it alone. Caleb suggested returning to the Magpie, arming up, and returning to rescue any survivors, to which Theban agreed.
The scavengers returned to their ship’s hatch, with stragglers being picked off along the way, only to find it locked. Theban opened the manual override, allowing them in, but they suspected their assailant was now on their ship. They armed themselves and moved on the bridge, only to find the door jammed. Theban ordered Caleb to decouple their ship from the Protoss one to prevent them from getting caught when the Protoss ship fell into the planet’s atmosphere, but before they could the sound of footsteps echoed through their ship.
As they prepared for a fight, a flash grenade blinded them. When the scavengers sight returned, they found themselves faced with a number of Terran Dominion marines lead by Captain Barlow, who stated the scavengers were under arrest.
Next in issue #3, After being accosted by Captain Barlow and her Terran Dominion marines, Gene (a Magpie scavenger) opened fire on her forces, leading to a brief firefight that killed one of the scavengers and wounded Grace. Captain Theban then surrendered, and Barlow took Caleb aside, telling him to come along with her. He agreed and was brought in for interrogation aboard her Liberator.
In the interrogation room, Barlow told Caleb of the trouble he was in with the law, as they violated a treaty with the Daelaam. Caleb insisted that there was something on the ship following them. Not long after Davis burst in, telling them that they had found something in the ship’s logs. Elsewhere on the ship, as Captain Jackson begun to seal the hatches, he was attacked by the shadowy assailant and killed.
Going through the logs, Davis and Barlow studied the files they had found, revealing the attacker to be an imprisoned Nerazim who was held for murdering other Protoss. The Protoss were transporting her when the records were cut off. Barlow stated that the ship had to be destroyed, and sent Caleb back to his cell, but when the marine escorting him opened the door Caleb turned on him and knocked him down. The scavengers then killed the guard and rearmed themselves.
The scavengers then stormed the Liberator’s bridge as they were preparing to destroy the derelict ship and the Magpie. The Scavengers fired on the marines, gunning them down, but Davis was able to activate firing procedures, destroying the Protoss ship and the Magpie. Enraged, Kyra shot Barlow and began to stomp her face until she was nothing but a bloody mess. Theban stated though they lost their ship, they had the Protoss salvage and the Liberator, and they prepared to leave. But as they made preparations, a Protoss psionic voice came from the corpses of the Dominion marines, telling them that they will soon all be dead.
Finally in issue #4, Following the death of Captain Barlow and her Terran Dominion marines, the mysterious Nerazim assailant spoke through the corpses to the scavenger crew on how they were all going to die, as she saw that as little more than insects. Captain Nero Theban ordered his scavengers to shoot the corpses to quiet the Protoss’s attack, and began to shout about how the United Earth Directorate would return to purify them from the sector. But when he brought it up, Grace protested, saying he should have told them. Outraged, Theban shot her, then told them they would hunt down the Nerazim.
Caleb suggested that they seal themselves in the bridge and vent the ship, sending the Protoss into space, but Theban refused, saying they needed to take it down themselves. Caleb then told Kyra they could still do the plan as something was wrong with Captain Theban. Kyra refused, as terrans needed to stick together.
The group exited the room, only to have Gene be stabbed by the Nerazim, who then decapitated Theban. Kyra and Caleb tried to run to the escape pods and wait for Dominion forces to arrive, but the Protoss jettisoned the escape pods. While discussing what to do, the two were met by the Nerazim, who revealed herself to them. Caleb tried to surrender, but Kyra raised her gun. The Nerazim told them that one of them needed to survive to fly the ship and aid her, and Kyra immediately said that it should be her. Caleb reflected on Kyra recruiting him from his home, before agreeing she should be the one to make it off the ship.
The Nerazim ordered that Kyra kill Caleb, and she began to turn to shoot him, but she stabbed Kyra with her warp blade, saying Caleb was stronger, and the pain would make him more malleable. Caleb and the Nerazim went to the cockpit of the liberator and sped off to parts unknown.
