What if the Hulk wasn’t really a tragic hero at all, but an uncontrollable mass murderer who leaves death and destruction in his wake? And what if Doc Samson, the benevolent super-powered physicist, wasn’t a friend of the Hulk, but a government agent bent on destroying the Hulk—and covering up any evidence of his very existence, by any means necessary?
That’s the basic premise of writer Brian Azzarello’s (100 Bullets, Hellblazer) four-issue limited series, wherein we see the Hulk in a completely new—and yet scarily familiar—light. Azzarello, with artist Richard Corben, makes a real horror story out of this, bringing the Hulk closer to his literary origins—the tale of Jekyll and Hyde—than anyone ever has before. Quite aside from seeing the gory ramifications of a Hulk rampage, we also see the genuine terror of Bruce Banner, who must bear witness to the suffering and devastation the Hulk has wrought—and know that he is responsible for it. Little wonder then, that by the end of the first issue, we find Banner standing alone on a hilltop, putting a gun in his mouth and preparing to pull the trigger. If you were the reason a killer Hulk existed, what would you do?
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, What would you do if you knew that you were a ticking time bomb? If you knew that your continued existence meant unlimited death and destruction? What would you do if at any moment you could transform into the rampaging monster known as the Hulk? You see, nerdy scientist Bruce Banner has to answer those questions. For when he loses his cool, the 98-lb. weakling transforms into a 1,000-lb., green-skinned engine of devastation! Relentlessly tormented by his monstrous “id,” and vigilantly pursued by an elite military unit headed by the enigmatic Doc Samson, Banner has nowhere to hide. After all, how can you outrun the mass murderer inside you?
Next in part #2, Having located the green-skinned monstrosity in the New Mexico desert, Doc Sampson prepares his troops for a High Noon showdown. With a 1,000 Blackhawk helicopters at his disposal, the mysterious government agent has a formidable arsenal, but he’s brought along a secret weapon — just to be safe!
Next in part #3, Doc Samson’s got Bruce Banner – and his monstrous alter ego – just where he wants him! With the Hulk reeling from his secret weapon, Samson prepares for the knockout punch!
Finally in part #4, What’s one life when balanced against thousands? That’s the question that Doc Samson must answer now that he’s got his old friend Bruce Banner down for the count! Who will be the ultimate casualty of war in the escalating battle between Samson and his own monstrous alter ego?
