Durham Red (a.k.a. the Bitch) is a human mutant – one of the better known, more colorful characters from the cast of Strontium Dog. Her particular mutant ability takes the form of vampirism but without the traditional supernatural vulnerabilities. Shunned by humankind for being a mutant, shunned by mutant kind for being a vampire, Red retreated to the stars, ultimately becoming a galactic bounty hunter.

Reprinted here in this short and slick mini-series is “The Island of the Damned,” one of Red’s mind-bending adventures. It was originally published as a 12-part serial within the pages of 2000 A.D., Britain’s celebrated science fiction/fantasy anthology title.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, After returning to Earth and finding her younger mutant sister dying from the overdose of a strange new drug, Red goes on a warpath vowing death and vengeance. In her blind rage, she could not see that this path would lead her also to torture and madness.

Finally in issue #2, Captured and put in chains, Durham Red has to endure the pain and humiliation of “The Island of the Damned” until she can figure a way out!
