Description
Sturm Battalion #1 Comic
Writer: Ron Ledwell
Artist: Ron Ledwell
Cover by: Ron Ledwell
The Battle of Anzio was a battle of the Italian Campaign of World War II that commenced January 22, 1944.
Anzio
When the Allies landed at Anzio, the German Tenth Army under General Viteinghof were caught off balance, and the Allied commander was too cautious and instead of fanning in force out from the beaches to exploit the weak German resistance he sent his Ranger battalions ahead to explore the Gernan positions and then he dug in on the beach. The Germans, always quick to take advantage of a tactical error by the enemy, quickly ringed the beaches with their crack Sturm battalions, integrated with armor and crack SS troops. The Sturm troopers rapidly encircled the Rangers and pushed them back to the beaches.
Story (Spoilers!)
Issue #1, “Anzio”, The German order of battle was very flexible – it allowed the integration of various miscellaneous units from various branches to be patched together very quickly into cohesive “sturm” (assault) units. Especially in the Italian theater. When the assets of the German Navy were sunk or cut off along the Adriatic coastline the Germans quickly reorganized the stranded sailors into mountain and Sturm Units complete with kit and sent them into the Gustav Line or wherever they were most needed. Elite German Parachute troops also comprised some of these Sturm Units and were integrated into the Herman Goering Panzer Division to oppose the Anzio landings.
The Sturm battalions were often responsible for – and successful in – holding the line against far more numerous enemy forces!
