Shrinking down, the Mighty Mite discovers that the world is a very different place when seen from a different point of view. A very, very small point of view!
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Stormy Passage”, Ray Palmer discovers his wife Jean cheating on him with her new legal partner, Paul Hoban. Hurt, he takes a trip to the Amazon jungle in search of a White Dwarf Star Fragment, but is attacked by the pilots of his charter plane, who are cocaine smugglers. He becomes the Atom to fight back, but the plane crashes and both smugglers die. The Atom discovers his size-and-weight controls have been short-circuited, stranding him at six-inch height in the jungle. He encounters a tribe of tiny yellow-skinned people, including Princess Laethwen and rebel leader Taren, both of them citizens of the hidden city of Morlaidh. Atom and Taren are taken prisoner, though the Atom attempts to fight back. Meanwhile, in Ivy Town, Jean Loring hears that her husband’s wedding band has been discovered in the plane wreckage in Brazil and mistakenly assumes Ray Palmer is dead.
Next in issue #2, “A Choice of Dooms”, The Atom and Taren are rescued from the rats so that they may fight in Morlaidh’s gladiatorial games. However, Taren is blinded before the games, by order of King Caellich’s prime minister Deraegis. When the blinding is discovered, a riot breaks out, and the Atom and Taren are spirited away to a rebel camp outside the city, which Princess Laethwen also joins. Since Taren is blind, the Atom becomes leader and trainer of the rebels, who await their chance to attack and depose Caellich and Deraegis.
Next in issue #3, “Mourning’s End”, Jean Loring, having believed herself a widow, had been moving on with her life when a burned body was discovered with Ray Palmer’s wedding ring. Suspecting he might still be alive, Jean books a flight to Brazil. Meanwhile, a blind Taren suspects a spy in his military. Voss, second in command, also believes a spy is present, but thinks the spy is Atom. The two fight and, as a result, develop a tentative trust. In the city of Morlaidh, advisor Deraegis tries to convince King Caellich that the star drive (the ship that brought the aliens to Earth decades ago) is working and should be used to power the city. King Caellich says it was unstable which is why it was shut off. Deraegis’ men have been studying and repairing it which angers Caellich as it is forbidden to do so. He chastises Deraegis and tells him to forget the star drive. Deraegis then meets with one of his men and tells him to continue working on the machine. Voss and Atom discuss the upcoming attack on Morlaidh. Atom is hesitant to attck while Taren is still alive but Voss and the men are getting restless. Suddenly animals begin racing through the jungles and the men deduce that a swarm of ants is racing through the jungles. Most men escape. Taren refuses to leave preferring to die but Atom knocks him out and carries him. Atom, Taren, Voss and Laethwen climb up some branches but the ants swarm closer. Taren sacrifices himself to the ants. Soon the spy sends a message to Deraegis informing him of Taren’s death. Deraegis reflects that, thanks to his manipulations, the city’s inhabitants are moving towards a revolt and he hopes to take power in that event. After being attacked by (and defeating) a caiman (crocodile), Atom prepares the army to attack Morlaidh.
Finally in issue #4, “ Look Homeward, Atom”, The Atom leads the revolt against Caellich, who is stabbed to death by Deraegis. Deraegis in turn is killed by Voss, a rebel, but not before the villain activates the Star Drive — powered by the White Dwarf Star Fragment that Ray came to the Amazon for. The Atom tries to deactivate the drive but fails, and is bathed in Dwarf Star energy — reactivating his growth mechanism. He manages to induce the Morlaidhians to abandon their city and escapes himself before it explodes, knocking him unconscious at full six-foot height. Ray Palmer is found, nursed back to health, and reunited with Jean Loring. But he now loves Princess Laethwen, and vows to find the tiny tribe in the Amazon jungle again.
