Description
Tales of the Dead Comics Lot
Editor: Pamela G. Hazelton
Cover #1 by: Scott Harrison
Cover #2 by: Roach
Tales of the Dead is a horror anthology by Joseph M. Monks. Each issue contains 3 stories that the next issue picks up on and continues, establishing a continuity between issues and allowing for more character development than your standard horror anthology. The main villain of these books are the shambling undead, featured by different artists in a grotesque manner that is typical with the zombie genre. The first issue contains a handful of pin-up art pieces and the second issue contains a bonus, one-off story.
Tales of the Dead contains:
“The PartyCrasher” – Parts 1 & 2
Writer: Joseph M. Monks
Artist: Ed McGuinness
Letterers: Joseph M. Monks & P.O. Chips
A getaway weekend of booze, sex, and fun was interrupted by a mangled, mutilated camper. After attacking several members of the biker clan, gangleader DJ Quade placed a bullet through the zombie’s skull, but not before it could take a bite out of his lover Gaye’s ankle. With several bikers dead, Quade, longtime buddy Keebler, and Gayle spilt-up from the rest of the group to obtain medical assistance for the bitten girl. Wells, a hot-headed member of the clan is left behind in charge…
——————————————————————————–
“Bizarre Funeral March” – Parts 1 & 2
Writer: Joseph M. Monks
Artists: Tom O’ Connor & Rob Stull
Letterers: Joseph M. Monks & P.O. Chips
In the wake of a tragic bus-accident, a small town prepares to deal with a barrage of funerals and wakes while bodies are slowly moved from the morgue to the morticians. On the morning of the first scheduled burials, Jim Peters prepares to attend services with his nephew for the boy’s deceased father, Jim’s brother. The boy, whose mother had died years earlier is now in the custody of Jim and his live-in girlfriend Jane. Approaching the cemetery in the early morning hours they make a grisly discovery, as Jim is confronted with a small legion of the undead prowling the local graveyard…
——————————————————————————–
“Earthly Rumblings” – Parts 1 & 2
Writer: Joseph M. Monks
Artist: Chuck Regan
Letterers: Joseph M. Monks & P.O. Chips
Parker, an American Indian Shaman and his girlfriend Allison, upon sensing a growing natural disturbance, seek out its center, and discover a priest who might hold the key to its cause. With the apparent suicide of the cleric, and arrival of local authorities, chaos begins to break out with the knowledge that the dead, in this case, don’t appear to want to remain that way. In the wake of these events, an elder clergyman, with an alcoholic past and his best years behind him, recognizes the dangers at hand and does his best to prepare the nonbelievers for what is yet to come…

Collectible Entertainment comment: Tales of the Dead (1994 – 1995) is an ill-fated title that was originally to have run for eight issues instead of just the two that were published and is therefore an incomplete series containing multiple incomplete story lines…. Nonetheless, Joseph M. Monks still serves up some top-notch story telling accompanied by gritty zombie artwork from cover to interior. Recommended for any Horror and/or Zombie enthusiast. It’s good stuff.
