Tarzan (John Clayton II, Viscount Greystoke) is a fictional character, an archetypal feral child raised in the African jungle by the Mangani great apes; he later experiences civilization, only to reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer. The character has been variously depicted as articulate and sophisticated as in the original novels, and as a noble savage with limited language skills such as in the films featuring Johnny Weissmuller. Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan first appeared in the novel Tarzan of the Apes (magazine publication 1912, book publication 1914), and subsequently in 23 sequels, several books by Burroughs and other authors, and innumerable works in other media, both authorized and unauthorized.
In “Tarzan the Warrior”, Tarzan and Jane are swept to another reality where they meet a rift-tech, an alien who navigates alternate realities.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, It started in a park just north of Baltimore, Maryland, where Jane and John Cannon were attempting to save the life of an ape-like creature identified as Bigfoot. They were just trying to help – but they didn’t want to be discovered. Of course, they were surprised in the act by the police. John tossed the Bigfoot’s body into their Rover and Jane laid rubber getting out of there. The high-speed chase took them into the heart of Baltimore. If that wasn’t enough, at the same time in London, England a mysterious, man kidnapped the aging Lord Greystoke for reasons he wasn’t telling. Back in Baltimore, in a downtown alley, Jane hot-rodded the Rover through an unexpected rift between dimensions. She and John found themselves caught up in an alien spacecraft wreck on a dimensional twin to Earth. There they attempted to protect the alien Rift-Tech, Wom’cha from the mutiny of a race of shape-changers who were her crew. Known as Troopers, they had been the slaves of Wom’cha’s space-traveling race. Turns out that Wom’cha’s spacecraft uses dimensional=rift technology to get around between on planet and the next. The wrecked spacecraft engines are causing all of the unexpected rifts between dimensions. But John, Jane and Wom’cha make the best of it and escape through one of these rifts! Then they find themselves in a post-apocalyptic version of Baltimore…
Issue #1 features a “flip” cover giving two “front” covers by Marc Hempel & Simon Bisley. (see scans 2 & 3) Awesome!!!
Next in issue #2, A guided missile puts a “dent” in John’s head! But he’s tough and he survived to confront the frightening news that he, Jane and the space alien Wom’cha were stranded in the Lost City of Baltimore. Wom’cha explained that the damaged engines from her wrecked spacecraft were warping the fabric of dimensional space, creating rifts! These rifts were acting like doors to other dimensions. At the same time, Lord Greystoke was suffering at the hands of his kidnappers in the back of a moving van that was racing to the western coast of England. Back in the Lost City of Baltimore, another rift opened allowing the shape-shifting Troopers (Wom’cha’s one-time servants) to pick up the trail of our heroes! With barely any lead, John, Jane and Wom’cha attempt to out distance the Troopers, searching the whole while for another rift. Lord Greystoke finally admits to his captors that he is 115 years old! The was impressive news until his captors reveals that he is 94 years old! Time to open the old folk’s home! Or maybe everybody should just call the mortician! John, Jane and Wom’cha are sucked into yet another dimensional rift – and the Troopers are right behind them…
Next in issue #3, Who the heck is Tarzan? In the first three issues we’ve followed the adventures of at least three different people who could be the Jungle Lord. The mysterious Dave Hunt looks like Tarzan – but he’s got a real nasty attitude. Hunt is convinced that Jackie Clayton, the Lord of Greystoke, is Tarzan. But Jackie, Hunt’s kidnap victim is too old to be swinging from the trees – and Tarzan is supposed to be immortal. Hunt claims that he is the son Tarzan – and he’s hauling Jackie around the world to prove it. Jackie is convinced that Hunt is insane! Meanwhile and far way, John and John Cannon are stuck in an alternate dimension – a world known as Kal-Dan. How did they get there? Way back in issue one, they ran into an alien from another world who calls herself Wom’cha. Wom’cha was the inter-dimensional expert on board an advanced spacecraft. When her spacecraft crashed – right on top of John and Jane – the dimension-warping engines began ripping holes in the walls between worlds. Naturally, our crowd of characters were dumped from one crisis to another until they ended up living with an exiled nation of civilized yeti! The yeti prince Frak signed john on as a teacher for young prince Frakson and gave him the title of Warrior (This is a clue!). Now, John, Jane, and Wom’cha and her “troopers” are escaping from the yeti tribe, rescuing and freeing the tribe’s abused slaves – John and Jane can’t resist doing a good deed. And we will see in the next issue – page one to be exact – good deeds do not go unrewarded.
Next in issue #4, Violence! Mayhem! War! As thousands of yeti attacking and killing thousands of other yeti! There was blood, gore and pain! And smack dab in the middle of it all were Jane and John Cannon, late of Baltimore. Its more trouble than John and Jane can shake a stick at…
Finally in issue #5, Will the real Lord of the Jungle please come forward? Tarzan’s identity is revealed and a battle to the death is soon to follow. Will Tarzan survive to be reunited with Jane?…
