Frank Frazetta was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, LP record album covers, the animated film “Fire and Ice”, and other media. He is often referred to as the “Godfather of fantasy art”, and one of the most renowned illustrators of the 20th century. He was also the subject of a 2003 documentary Painting with Fire. Frank Frazetta was inducted into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame, the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was awarded a Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention. Frank Frazetta‘s work in comics and animation has won him world-wide recognition and a “cult” fan following. Of which I am one.

Fantasy art’s favorite painter was also one of the most popular comic book illustrators during the industry’s golden age. Telling Stories: The Comic Art of Frank Frazetta celebrates the rare and largely forgotten stories created five decades ago by this iconic artist. Frazetta’s early, uncollected comic art is compiled here in this handsome deluxe edition. These jungle adventures, true-life tales of heroism, and dreamy love stories not only exhibit the skill of a master craftsman but also provide tantalizing glimpses of where the young artist’s career would ultimately take him. This Limited Deluxe Hardcover Edition features the complete “Thunda” tales and his best romance works, such as “Untamed Love”, “Empty Heart”, “A Love of My Own”, “The Wrong Road”, “Too Late for Love”. Additionally, there are heroic works, such as war comics from Heroic Comics; adventure, with White Indian, the long-running series for ME, “Squeeze Play,” complete with a special introduction, his one and only solo-drawn story for EC. “Here’s Captain Comet”, a rare SF story with Al Williamson; “Judy of the Jungle”, a pre-Thunda Africa adventure, and “War of the Gladiators”, and some of his best and most obscure works from the late 1940s, one, two and three page classics. Also includes informative text explaining the context and the influences these tales had on the comic industry.

All the stories have been newly colored, giving them each a fresh quality that highlights rather than obscures the art, as the original coloring often did. The long 18-page introduction offers an overview of Frank’s comic book work, from his first in Tally Ho Comics to his rare solo work for the Warren magazines and Witzend. It is beautifully illustrated, including from the original black and white pages.
