Robert E. Howard’s Conan first appeared in the pages of pulp magazines in the 1930s. He contributed 17 Conan stories to Weird Tales Magazine from 1932 to 1936. Through these stories we see Robert E. Howard’s savage hero take shape.

Red Nails was originally serialized in Weird Tales magazine from July to October 1936, the months after Robert E. Howard’s suicide. It is set in the fictional Hyborian Age and concerns Conan and the fierce female warrior Valeria entering a lost city whose degenerate inhabitants are entangled in a murderous blood feud. Due to its dark themes of decay and death, the story is considered a classic of Conan lore while also cited by Howard scholars as one of his best tales.

Story (Spoilers!)
In issue #1C, Conan finds himself in the Darfar region, whose territory is almost entirely covered by a huge forest. Here he pledges himself a mercenary, promising his sword to the highest bidder, fighting alongside fellow mercenary and fierce female warrior Valeria. After a clash against a terrible dragon, the two go to a strange fortified city, apparently deserted… but the duo will quickly discover that a civilization lives hidden inside, and that the citadel hides a heavy secret.
