The classic series Moonshadow was originally published under Marvel’s Epic line in 1985. Then in 1994, DC Comics / Vertigo reprinted it unchanged with the exception of adding new cover art. Considered one of the most ground-breaking and literate comic series of all-time is finally collected in one mammoth volume, showcasing the very best in modern storytelling and painted artwork. This adult fairy tale is a work that evokes comparison with Lewis Carroll & William Blake. Although writer J.M. DeMatteis has gone on to become one of the most prolific writers in the comics business, Moonshadow represents some of his finest and most inspired work. Working with watercolorist Jon J Muth, he created a “fairy tale for adults” about a young boy coming of age and losing his innocence. It’s an elaborate allegory disguised as space fantasy, wherein the boy Moonshadow seeks his destiny from his upbringing in a galactic insane asylum. This single huge paperback volume collects both the original run of Moonshadow and its sequel, Farewell Moonshadow. In part #1, “Songs of Happy Chear”, Moonshadow is a young man who is raised in an intergalactic zoo.
Next in part #2, “A Very Uncomfortable Thing”, Sunflower, who is Moonshadow’s mother, is eaten alive by a baby alien she is trying to help.
Next in part #3, “The Crying of the Wind”, With Ira’s help, Moonshadow escapes from an insane asylum, only to get caught up in the character’s heist scheme.
Next in part #4, “The Hoofs of Wrath”, Moonshadow and Ira join the army and end up in a confusing war.
Next in part #5, “In a Lone Land”, Moonshadow endures the horrors of war in a conflict much like Vietnam. Later, Moonshadow’s genealogy is revealed.
Next in part #6, “Through the Window”, Moonshadow and the indulgent Ira are rewarded for their valor on the field of battle.
Next in part #7, “Book Seven: Counterpane”, Pobidiah Unkshush and his family become a nemesis of Moonshadow. Moonshadow is also ostracized by his former employers.
Next in part #8, “Book Eight: Candles”, Moonshadow finds himself in a world that refuses to acknowledge his existence. Luckily, he reunites with Lord Gaylord.
