Description
The Death of Groo the Wanderer Oversized Trade Paperback
Writer: Mark Evanier
Artist: Sergio Aragones
Colorist: Tom Luth
Letterer: Stan Sakai
Editors: Daniel Chichester & Steve Buccellato
Cover by: Sergio Aragones
Groo first appeared as a parody of the brutal sword and sorcery heroes who were popular at the time of his creation in the 1970s, especially Conan the Barbarian as presented in Marvel Comics. Groo is a large-nosed buffoon of unsurpassed stupidity who constantly misunderstands his surroundings. Possessed of superlative skills in swordsmanship (the only task at which he is remotely competent), he delights in combat but otherwise is a peaceable and honest fellow who tries to make his way through life as a mercenary or by working odd jobs. He is incredibly accident-prone, and despite generally good intentions causes mass destruction wherever he goes. Most of his adventures end with him either oblivious to the mayhem he has wrought or fleeing an angry mob. His penchant for destruction has become so widely known that just the news of Groo approaching is sometimes enough to cause chaos among the population. Groo occasionally meets with respect and good fortune, but it does not last. Businesses, towns, civilizations, and cultures have all been unwittingly destroyed by Groo. Such is Groo’s incompetence that so much as his stepping onto a ship can cause it to sink.
A sword and sorcery comedy from Sergio Aragones, featuring Groo’s skill with the sword that is only exceeded by his stupidity, making him dangerous to friend and foe alike. This first Groo graphic novel and is followed by “The Life of Groo the Wanderer”. After everyone believes he is dead, Groo gets to see how people would react to his passing, as he unsuccessfully tries to convince them that he’s still alive.
Story/Spoilers
Groo learns at a local tavern that the entire town, ruled by Krag, hates him and is ordered to kill him on sight. While in the tavern, Groo defends the honor of the tavern maid, Sylva. Groo is apparently the only man who ever stood up for her.
In order to win respect, Groo vows to defeat the Floom-Floom, a large dragon that lives near the town. Groo survives his encounter with the Floom-Floom but loses his swords, which are brought to Krag as proof of death. The citizenry celebrate Groo’s death. A funeral for Groo is held; all of Groo’s acquaintances celebrate his death. Groo feels betrayed. Sylva feels sympathy for the wanderer.
After the funeral, it is revealed that Groo in in fact, still alive! Groo, while attempting to hide from the citizenry, shaves Krag. Krag, clean-shaven and wearing Groo’s abandoned clothing, is chased out of town by the citizenry directly into the arms of the Floom-Floom.
Groo finds his old clothes (uneaten by the Floom-Floom) and believing he is friendless, leaves town. The Minstrel tells Groo to turn around. Sylva, thankful that the tyrant Krag is gone, kisses Groo on the nose.
