Harley helps the Joker deal with a recurring nightmare where he is executed for his crimes. The Joker awakes with a start from a recurring nightmare. Opening up to his then-lover Harley Quinn, Joker recounts the dream in vivid detail. Locked away in Blackgate Prison, the authorities have finally turned their backs on his insanity defense and decided Joker will be executed for his crimes. As the time approaches, Joker turns the coming execution into a farce: he demands to die in his suit and creates a rose out of toilet paper to put in his lapel. He requests a pie for his final meal, which he throws into the face of the priest who comes to read him his last rites. He makes a show of being led through the cell-block, with a near riot breaking out. The family members of his victims arrive to watch the event, and he insults them until they’re banging on the glass to reach him. Joker keeps making jokes, even as he’s forced into the electric chair, but he goes silent when he realizes that Batman has also come to watch. Joker is initially confused, unsure of what his greatest enemy wants out of this. To his horror, though, a giant smile slowly grows across the Dark Knight’s face. As the electric chair goes off and the execution officially begins, Batman laughs and laughs and laughs. Suddenly, Joker is surrounded by different versions of Batman, all laughing at his final terrible fate. Joker pleads in vain, begging for Batman to not laugh at him – which is when the dream ends.
