In 1993, Dark Horse Comics released a series of sixteen different comics to introduce their “Comics’ Greatest World.” Among the many new characters to be introduced was the unlikely hero known as “The Machine.” Avram Roman was once a man – now he’s The Machine, a living soul trapped within a biomechanical scarecrow of flesh and metal. Inhumanly strong, virtually indestructible, The Machine is a powerful ally of Barb Wire.
The Machine is a cyborg who used to be a man known as Avram Roman before he was experimented on and fitted with metal and computer components. Although he is terribly disfigured, he uses his power to help innocents. By plugging into a computer and television network called the Matrix, he can keep watch over the entire city of Steel Harbor. The Machine never sleeps but loves his quiet time. Perhaps not surprisingly, he has few friends, but among them is the beautiful female bounty hunter Barb Wire.
This mini-series continues from the Machine’s first appearance in Comics’ Greatest World: The Machine (1993) Issue #1. Dark Horse Comics
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Judgement Hour”, Out of the pages of Barb Wire comes the most offbeat, unusual character you’ve seen from Dark Horse yet – Avram Roman, the Machine! Writer John Arcudi brings you a tale of mistaken identity and retribution on the mean streets of Steel Harbor. Ted Naifeh’s stunning art brings to life the tortured, half-human denizen of a decaying industrial dystopia. Don’t miss this chance to see this hands-down fan-favorite character in action!
Avram Roman, a man cursed to the troubled existence as The Machine. The Machine’s home base is Steel Harbor, a decaying industrial metropolis whose glory days are long gone. Now the filthy streets of the city are overrun by violent street gangs, many of them superpowered, making Steel Harbor a frightening place to live. And despite his benevolence, The Machine’s hideous appearance doesn’t make the people of Steel Harbor feel any safer…
Next in issue #2, “Top of the Heap”, He collects and studies mechanical items – everything from TVs to blenders to semi-automatic weapons – dissecting them in an effort to find out what makes them tick. And now he wants to do the same to Avram Roman, the man cursed to live his life as The Machine. His name is Salvage, and if he gets his way, this latest adventure of The Machine will be his last!
Next in issue #3, “Heaven in Hell”, Of all the unusual characters inhabiting Steel Harbor, the most tragic is Avram Roman – the half-human, half-mechanized Machine. When Avram spots what seems to be a kindred spirit in a traveling freak show, it’s time for The Machine to get involved. The people of Steel Harbor want this show out of town, though… even if it takes an angry mob to do it!
As a bizarre side-show attraction finds its way into Steel Harbor, Avram Roman, the cybernetic man-mockery known as The Machine, soon finds that he’s not the only monster in town.
Finally in issue #4, “Skin Games”, A new menace has come to Steel Harbor: Skion, a grotesque parasite who takes malicious glee in sucking the life dry from his victims. But when Skion absorbs the body of an old friend of Avram Roman’s, Avram – also known as The Machine – must face this monstrosity in a battle that may cost him his very life.
