Description
WW2: The O.S.S. Comics Lot
Writer: Ron Ledwell
Artist: Ron Ledwell
Cover by: Ron Ledwell
The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was an intelligence agency of the United States during World War II. The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Other OSS functions included the use of propaganda, subversion, and post-war planning. The OSS was dissolved a month after the end of the war.
Story (Spoilers!)
Issue #1, “Operation Dragoon”, While the Battle of Normandy raged, Allied commanders launched the invasion of the “soft underbelly” of Europe: “Operation Dragon”. The Germans had been stripping the French Mediterranean of its defensive divisions to throw into the cauldron of the Normandy Invasion. Inserting O.S.S. Special Forces prior to the invasion, the Allies activated the French Maquis to begin operating behind the German lines, disrupting German communications and the movement of German forces throughout the hilly and mountainous terrain that made up the physical contours of the Cote d’ Azur.
The Germans, weakened by the constant transfer of divisions to the north, were hard-pressed to counter the operations of the Marquis. With most major divisions sent north, the Germans tried to convert small naval and Luftwaffe units into cohesive land forces to confront the Allied landings. But finally the collapsing Germans fled north in an attempt to join the Normandy battle. What few units that eventually did link up with the German Army fighting for its life in the Falaise Pocket succeeded only in leaving one disaster to join another.
Issue #2, “Magnetic North”, For the Allies, the Scandinavian Theatre was far more important strategically than it would appear, given the meager of Allied forces assigned to “The War in the North.” The coal mines and the fish oil plants at Narvik, Vaagso and Trondheim were vital to the German war effort. Numerous German naval units were cleverly hidden in the thousands of fiords along Norway’s coast to protect these assets. Sabotaging the contribution of occupied Norway to Hitler’s war effort became a serious challenge for the Allies.
Weather stations, another important factor in both the Allied and Axis war-making capabilities, were strung out across the coast of far northern Norway. Near Tromso lay a German weather facility which fed vital meteorological data to Hitler’s commanders, information of critical importance to operations on the Eastern Front. “Special Operations” forces were secretly dispatched by the Allies to eliminate this station.
Getting to the objective, and returning after completing the mission, would be the most difficult part of the operation. Isolated deep in a frozen wasteland, the weather station was also protected by a larger German detachment that the Allies had anticipated.
Follow us into “The Frozen North” as the Allied commandos fan out toward their objective…
