A 2-part story featuring the Punisher’s first ‘Nam appearance! Sergeant Frank Castle heads to Vietnam to complete a suicide mission to take down an enemy sniper. The origin of the Punisher’s legendary symbol the origin of his infamous name… The Punisher, are born!
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, “The Long Sticks – Part 1”, A Vietnamese sniper known as “The Monkey” is picking off American soldiers in the Duc Pho Province with alarming ease, making shots no average man should be able to achieve. After he takes down an American Colonel, the military decides it’s time to shut him down. They select the best man for the job, ace sniper Sgt. Frank Castle, and send him into enemy territory with a squad of the best men they have to offer. Castle and his men run into trouble. The entire team except Castle is killed and Frank is taken prisoner. There he is confronted by The Monkey, who brags to him about the target of his next mission. Monkey sets off to kill Frank’s mentor Captain James, and Frank seemingly hangs himself in his makeshift cell.
In part #2, “The Long Sticks – Part 2”, The story begins with prison of war Sgt. Frank Castle found by a Vietnamese solider, hanging in his cell. The soldier enters the cell and Frank springs into action. Castle had faked his hanging by running a length of cloth from his belt to the noose to support his weight. Castle leaves a trail of dead Vietnamese soldiers in his wake as he escapes and sets out to intercept the sniper known as “The Monkey”. A group of soldiers find another Vietnamese soldier’s body tied to a tree with the calling card white skull painted on his carcass and begin to fear the crazy American soldier. Castle leaves a trail of death and destruction everywhere he goes until he finally reaches The Monkey. The Monkey believes he has gotten the drop on Castle, but it was a set-up by Frank, who takes out the Monkey with a “million-to-one shot”.
