In the 30’s and 40’s, millions of fans sat by their radios and read their pulp magazines, responding to those magic words ‘Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?’ The Shadow knows. Mysteriously cloaked in black, able to cloud the minds of others, invisible at will, The Shadow was and is truly one of the all-time greats. Assisted only by his operatives, loyal men and women who used their work-a-day skills to aid him, The Shadow struck terror into the dusky souls of criminals. But that was more than forty years ago. The world has changed a lot since then. Writer/artist Howard Chaykin began to wonder, How would The Shadow exist in the world now? A world in the middle of a massive technological revolution…a world besieged by chaos and corruption? And: When someone begins to murder The Shadow’s aged operatives, we get a chance to find out! And he’s nothing like you’d expect! Tough, brutal violence underscores each page as The Shadow emerges from hiding to seek the murderer – no matter what the cost! Howard Chaykin makes this storyline series an historic “The Shadow” event.
DC Comics presents, “The Shadow: Blood & Judgement”, Kent Allard is hired by wealthy playboy turned drug kingpin Lamont Cranston to take a plane to what turns out to be Shambhala, which is pretty much what you’d expect it to be if you’d read a synopsis of Lost Horizon. Allard thwarts Cranston’s plans – sending him into a ravine where he is presumed to have died. Allard is trained in the mystic arts by the people who run Shambhala, and sent out into the world to be their agent, where he assumed Cranston’s identity. Cut to the present day. The Shadow appears to have disappeared. His former agents, like Margo Lane, Harry Vincent, Moe Shrevnitz, Jericho Druke, and others, have retired – when someone starts picking them off. Allard emerges, unaging, from Shambhala, with two sons from a woman he met there, and a flying car – and sets out to find the mastermind responsible. It turns out to be Cranston, still alive, who has become a vice kingpin (again), and who has a test-tube son who is meant to be physically perfect, so that Cranston can force Allard to take him back to Shambhala and put his brain into his son’s body. And if he won’t, he’ll nuke New York.
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, The laugh had vanished…the mocking, sinister laugh that signaled doom for the petty souls whose wrongdoing stained the world. It was gone, lost in the night that echoed it. Now, one by one, his friends and operatives are being ruthlessly murdered. Someone is trying to draw him out. Thirty-five years later, it is time for him to return. Time for The Shadow to return to modern-day New York. The laugh is here again. The Shadow is back. God help the guilty.
Next in part #2, Hidden deep within the Himalayas, a legend is born! For the first time anywhere, Howard Chaykin reveals the secret origin of The Shadow!
Next in part #3, The die is cast as The Shadow hits New York after hours. The underground will never be the same!
Finally in part 4, What you’ve been waiting for – The Shadow’s final confrontation with a madman threatening to nuke New York!
