The Strain is a 2009 vampire horror novel by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. It is the first installment in The Strain Trilogy, and was followed by The Fall (2010) and The Night Eternal (2011). The Strain limited comic book series (2011-2013) written David Lapham, with artist Mike Huddleston was adapted from the novel of the same name. A television adaptation premiered on FX in 2014 and concluded in 2017. The Strain is widely acclaimed and considered Vampire Horror at its Finest! 

Two years ago, the Master won. He spread the vampire virus across New York and, by triggering a series of nuclear meltdowns, defeated the ancient vampires that opposed him. Now, in a world where the sun is all but blocked out by nuclear winter, the Master’s influence reaches across the globe. Hope is on life support, but a few remain who may revive it: an alcoholic, a doctor, an exterminator, a criminal, and a renegade vampire are humanity’s last chance…

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, It’s been two years since the Master’s plan succeeded and a near apocalypse coated the world in darkness. Now able to roam freely, the Master’s legion of vampires rule the world-a horrifying police state where humans are harvested for blood. As humanity despairs, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and an unlikely team of heroes continue their fight against extinction and hope to unlock the secret to the Master’s demise.

Next in issue #2, Hoping to reunite with his friends and hear positive news of their seemingly futile insurgent efforts against the vampires, a drug-addled Ephraim Goodweather heads for a Manhattan hospital. But when he arrives, he discovers a secret that may send his fragile psyche right over the edge! Meanwhile, the Master has taken interest in a new pet-a pet he’s teaching all sorts of wicked things!

Next in issue #3, As Ephraim Goodweather descends further into madness, dissecting an injured vampire and convinced that he can find something within its physiology that will give the rebellion an advantage, Vasiliy Fet finds an unlikely ally and makes a deal with someone very close to the Master. Meanwhile, Nora Martinez finds herself within the gates of the mysterious and terrifying Camp Liberty, a place no one ever leaves.

Next in issue #4, Known as the Born, he works with the rebellion, but he’s a vampire . . . Who, or what, is Mr. Quinlan? And what, exactly, is his connection to the Master? This issue sheds light on the past of the mysterious and badass bloodsucker slayer who is bent on destroying the Master’s strain and ending his reign.

Next in issue #5, A game-changing rescue mission is underway as our heroes storm the veritable slaughterhouse Camp Liberty, in search of Dr. Nora Martinez!

Next in issue #6, With their backs against the wall, outnumbered and outmatched in the vampire blood farm known as Camp Liberty, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his rebels could use some divine intervention. Thankfully, the sky is falling!

Next in issue #7, More of the vampires’ origins are revealed as Eph, consumed by guilt and his crippling addiction, heads toward a breaking point. The rebels will be betrayed to the Master; it’s only a matter of time with the odds stacked against them. Will Eph be the one to turn on them?

Next in issue #8, Eph and the other rebels make a plan to destroy the Master. But the Master has plans of his own, and a traitor in the rebels’ midst is revealed!

Next in issue #9, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather delves deep into the Master’s history in an attempt to find the monster’s origin site and kill him once and for all, but his path is uncertain. Meanwhile, the rebels’ secret base is under siege from a vast army of vampires. Will the Master finally wipe out the resistance?

Next in issue #10, It’s the beginning of the end… The Master, who’s created a new nuclear family with a vampiric Kelly Goodweather and her son Zack, gives the boy his final temptation-will he choose the Master or will he choose his father, Ephraim?

Next in issue #11, Having discovered the Master’s origin site, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his meager band of rebels have a slim chance of defeating their all-seeing, all-knowing vampiric nemesis. The Master is right on their tail with his legions in tow!

Finally in issue #12, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather versus The master… The final showdown!
