Alex Schomburg was a Puerto Rican commercial artist and comic-book artist and painter whose career lasted over 70 years. In 1923 he began work as a commercial artist with three of his brothers. In 1928, he worked with the National Screen Service, creating lantern slides and working on movie trailers there through 1944. During the 1930s, in addition to working for the NSS, Schomburg freelanced with Better Publications, producing interior line art for Thrilling Wonder Stories and other of the company’s pulp magazines. His skill at drawing anything mechanical soon had him illustrating aviation covers for Flying Aces and electronic equipment for the Hugo Gernsback pulp Radio Craft. Schomburg’s first science fiction-themed cover was for the September 1939 issue of Startling Stories. The following decade, Schomburg freelanced primarily for Timely Comics, the 1940s forerunner of Marvel Comics, displaying his talent for action tableaux in covers featuring Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch, and other superheroes. His first recorded comic book work were two covers released the same month, for Daring Mystery Comics #1 and Marvel Mystery Comics #3 (both cover-dated Jan. 1940). Schomburg would draw most of Timley’s covers, as well as a smattering of single-page interior illustrations, through Marvel Mystery Comics #76 (Sept. 1946). He also provided covers for Pines Publications, for titles including Exciting Comics and America’s Best Comics, featuring such superheroes as the Black Terror and the Fighting Yank, as well as for Harvey Comics, including the licensed radio-series crimefighter star of Green Hornet Comics. On some Pines comics from 1947 to 1949, he signed covers as “Xela.” Through the 1930s and 1940s, Schomburg produced over 500 comic book covers. In the early 1950s, Schomburg left comics and spent the remainder of his career on covers and illustrations for science fiction magazines, astrology publications, and books, including the Winston juvenile series. In 1977, Schomburg and a few of his fellow Golden Age comic book artists collaborated on the Invaders Annual #1, written by Roy Thomas. Schomburg penciled and inked a six-page chapter featuring the Golden Age Human Torch. Alex Schomburg is a legendary artist with a legendary legacy that has influenced and shaped the Superhero, Science Fiction and Jungle Adventure genres. “Alex Schomburg was to comic books what Norman Rockwell was to The Saturday Evening Post. He was totally unique, with an amazing distinctive style. You could never mistake a Schomburg cover for any other artists. When it came to illustrating covers, there was simply no one else in Alex’s league.” commented Stan Lee.
The Thrilling Comic Book Art of Alex Schomburg is a really beautiful book featuring the early artwork of Alex Schomburg. Contains an introduction by J. David Spurlock & Tim Lasiuta introducing Alex Schomburg, his work and his legacy. Vanguard Productions presents a significant collection of Schomburg’s vast artistic work profusely illustrated with more than a 100 reproductions of his vintage cover art with the cover’s origination and publication information. Ornate, flamboyant and outrageous covers of the time. Jammed with detail, these covers were wild and amazing. Schomburg’s work during the Golden age of Comics ranged from Captain America, the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner to covers for “Wonder Comics,” “America’s Best Comics,” “Exciting Comics,” and “The Fighting Yank” just to name but a few. This Deluxe Hardcover Edition with Slipcase was limited to 600 copies and is indicated within the book. Also includes a 16-page Collector’s Bonus Portfolio. Brand New & Factory Sealed.
From Back Cover:
Alex Schomburg has won every major award for both science-fiction and comic-book art. Thrilling Wonder, Captain America, America’s Best, Marvel, Exciting and Startling are but a few of the dazzling comic-book covers Schomburg produced in the Golden Age of Comics.
Schomburg was Timely-Marvel’s definitive WWII cover artist. The artist then shifted toward adorable pin-up-quality jungle girls and sci-fi (often signed “Xela”) in the trademark airbrush style that made him famous as a book and magazine illustrator.
Golden Age comic books with Schomburg covers are selling for record prices in America’s leading auction houses. This book collects, for the first time, a host of tantalizing Schomburg treasures in one volume. Patriotic superheroes, as well as jungle girls, robots, wild animals, and space travelers are loving rendered in airbrush in these romantic and nostalgic Pop-Art icons of the bygone era.
