Frankenstein is a 1931 American gothic pre-Code science fiction horror film directed by James Whale, produced by Carl Laemmle Jr., and adapted from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Frankenstein stars Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein (Victor Frankenstein in the novel), an obsessed scientist who digs up corpses with his assistant in order to assemble a living being from body parts. The resulting creature, often known as Frankenstein’s monster, is portrayed by Boris Karloff. Produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, Frankenstein premiered in Detroit, Michigan on November 19, 1931. Frankenstein was a commercial and critical success upon release and led to several sequels and spin-offs. It has had a notable influence on popular culture with the imagery of a maniacal “mad” scientist with a hunchbacked assistant… and the film’s depiction of Frankenstein’s monster have since become iconic.
Image Comics brings the classic Universal Monster: Frankenstein to comics with this comic series inspired by the 1931 film that retells the classic monster movie in a different way.
Story/Spoilers:
In issue #1B, “Chapter One: The Hands of a Father”, Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his unholy quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated police officer. But little does he know that the corpse has a son who is mourning a father – and that this young boy will forever change Frankenstein’s life.
Next in issue #2B, “Chapter Two: The Brain of a Killer”, Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant Fritz has one mission — find the supplies to make a new human being. However, a chance encounter between a police officer and a murderer may ruin even the best laid plans…
Next in issue #3B, “Chapter Three: The Heart of a Lover”, Elizabeth Lavenza discovers the truth about her fiancé Dr. Henry Frankenstein – and his true intentions – after presenting him with the one gift he desires. But is it too late to save those she loves?
Finally in issue #4B, “Chapter Four: The Eyes of a Monster”, Behold! The final confrontation between Frankenstein and his creation! But who is the real monster?
