Venom, or the Venom Symbiote, is a character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics, commonly in association with Spider-Man. Venom made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988). Venom was originally conceived as a supervillain, but has since become more of an antihero. Venom is a Symbiote, a sentient alien, with a gooey, almost liquid-like form. As with real-world symbiotes, it requires a host, usually human, to bond with for its survival. After bonding, the Symbiote endows its enhanced powers upon the host. When the Venom Symbiote bonds with a human, that new dual-life form refers to itself as “Venom”. The Venom Symbiote’s first known host was Spider-Man, who eventually separated himself from the creature when he discovered its true nature. The Symbiote went on to merge with other hosts, most notably Eddie Brock, its second and most infamous host, with whom it first became Venom and one of Spider-Man’s archenemies. According to S.H.I.E.L.D., it is considered one of the greatest threats to humanity, alongside Magneto, Doctor Doom, and Red Skull.
Venom is widely considered one of the Greatest Comic Book Villains of All Time!
Now, Marvel Comics Presents, “Venom on Trial”! Countless attempts to make Venom pay for his crimes have failed, since the alien symbiote was almost impossible to stop, much less hold in police custody. However, police detective Clark devises an ingenious trap for Venom using a high-powered audio system to attack the alien with sound. With the alien portion weakened, Eddie Brock, the host, was injected with a substance which blocks him from interacting with his alien “other.” As a result, Venom was finally taken in by the law. For once, escape seems impossible for Brock/Venom. Now, an ambitious prosecutor is determined to put Eddie Brock away for good. His best hope now is some aid of the legal variety. Luckily, he has the best defense lawyer in town: Matthew Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Law & Order”, Daredevil appearance. It’s the Marvel media circus of the decade as Venom is finally put on trial for his crimes! Eddie has two options to win his freedom: he can submit to judgment by a jury of his peers, or he can try to break out of the most misbegotten prison this side of the Rock–guess which choice he makes!
Next in issue #2, “Disorder in the Court”, With Matt Murdock (a.k.a. Daredevil) acting as his defense attorney, you’d think Venom would get off scott free, right? Wrong, because the prosecution brings in a surprise witness – none other than the ever-amazing Spider-Man! Looks like Venom will have to take matters into his own hands again!
Finally in issue #3, “Trial and Error”, Guest-starring Spider-Man, Carnage and Daredevil! Venom’s media circus explodes into an all-out throw down in the center ring! Plus: Venom is offered a Faustian deal to save his life and secure his freedom, but will he take it? And if he does, what will it mean to his status quo and to the rest of the Marvel Universe?
