Venom, or the Venom Symbiote, is a character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics, commonly in association with Spider-Man. Venom made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988). Venom was originally conceived as a supervillain, but has since become more of an antihero. Venom is a Symbiote, a sentient alien, with a gooey, almost liquid-like form. As with real-world symbiotes, it requires a host, usually human, to bond with for its survival. After bonding, the Symbiote endows its enhanced powers upon the host. When the Venom Symbiote bonds with a human, that new dual-life form refers to itself as “Venom”. The Venom Symbiote’s first known host was Spider-Man, who eventually separated himself from the creature when he discovered its true nature. In Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, a being known as The Beyonder gave Spider-Man a prize of sorts, in what appeared to be an extraordinary black costume. Eventually, this costume was revealed as an alien symbiote, who sought to permanently bond with Spider-Man. When Spider-Man rejected it, the symbiote turned malevolent and sought out another. The Symbiote went on to merge with other hosts, most notably Eddie Brock, its second and most infamous host, with whom it first became Venom and one of Spider-Man’s deadliest enemy. According to S.H.I.E.L.D., it is considered one of the greatest threats to humanity, alongside Magneto, Doctor Doom, and Red Skull.
Venom is widely considered one of the Greatest Comic Book Villains of All Time!
Now Marvel Comics presents, “Venom: Shiver”, Spider-man’s arch-nemesis, Venom, resurfaces near the Arctic Circle where he is jumping from host to host in an attempt to stay ahead of forces who hope to use the alien for their own evil purposes.
Story/Spoilers
In part #1, In northern Canada about thirty miles north of the arctic circle, An Army communications specialist officer making a routine errand run to a lab owned by the Ararat Corporation finds that everyone has been killed except for one lone survivor. They head back to her base, the radar station named “Christmastown”, where the surviving civilian lab tech starts freaking out into some manner of seizure.
Next in part #2, The mysterious man known as “The Suit” arrives and begins his search for Venom. Lieutenant Patricia Robertson and her army companions try to determine what went wrong at the civilian arctic base and Perry, the lone survivor, isn’t long on answers. Strange things begin to happen at the army base when the station becomes sealed off from the outside world by a fierce winter storm and the Killer alien Venom symbiote comes out of the shadows.
Next in part #3, The mysterious man known as “The Suit” shows up at the army base and tries to take down Venom while keeping the troops informed and in line. Things don’t work out exactly as planned. “The Suit” explains that Venom is a parasite from outer space, and that he’s here to isolate and destroy it. However his explanation is not readily accepted and his authority is not recognized. Things start to fall apart… and Venom is still lurking about.
Next in part #4, The mysterious man known as “The Suit” is down. Venom picks off all of the Army officers and comes after Lieutenant Patricia Robertson. The lone survivor, Perry, finally fesses up the whole story and tells Patricia that the Venom Alien is an alien experiment gone wild. and that they were all going to die!
Finally in part #5, The rest of her company dead, Robertson is left with only Perry, the sole survivor of the massacre at the research lab, to stop Venom before the alien can escape the isolated Arctic radar station. If Venom is allowed to reach civilization, it will become impossible to isolate or destroy. The only man who seems to know anything about stopping the creature — the mysterious Suit– was literally torn in half by Venom. Robertson is the last line of defense between Venom and a world that is completely unaware of the monster that stalks it from the shadows. Robertson has faced her fears… now she must face the inevitable truth: Either Venom dies, or they all die. One way or the other it all ends here.”
