In many of the great epics of Marvel “history,” we often are left to wonder, “Yes, but what if…?” What if the X-Men’s Phoenix had not died? What if Captain America, frozen from World War II, had only now been found? What if the Fantastic Four had never taken that fateful ride in space?

Now many of these questions can be answered. In What If…, we can explore the alternate realities that spring from those turning points in Marvel history.

Story/Spoilers
After running afoul of an evil sorcerer Conan is thrown into the Well at the Center of Time by the wizard Shamash-Shum-Ukin (…as seen in Savage Sword of Conan #7) and in an alternate reality is plunged into that mystic transtemporal Vortex (…as seen in What if #13) transporting him to the Earth today. Hurled him into the future, the Cimmerian finds himself in New York City, surrounded by 20th century civilization. As New Yorkers begin take notice of Conan, he quickly assesses his unfamiliar surroundings and begins a quest for a way back to the Hyborian Age. Conan manages to bridge the communication gap between himself and a female, New York cabbie named Danette. With Danette’s help, Conan devises a plan to get home by using an inverted “ziggurat,” namely the Guggenheim Museum, that, when struck by lightning, will somehow open a portal to his own time. Conan eventually makes his way to the Guggenheim, where he discovers that modern art is at least useful when fighting the police. He then leaves behind Danette and the 20th century and returns to the “uncivilized” time of the Hyborian Age.
