Editors: Rachel Roberts, Aaron Walker, Daniel Chabon & Cardner Clark
All Covers by: Isaac Hannaford
Dark Horse Comics presents a tense war story inspired by the massively popular (over 110 million players!) online game World of Tanks. World of Tanks: Roll Out is a five-issue mini-series adaptation of the video game and is set almost immediately after a beachhead is established in Normandy on D-Day and concentrates on the ensuing battle between British and German Tanks in the summer of 1944. Each brightly illustrated issues feature accurately rendered tanks engaged in an actual World War II battle—along with lots of comic-book style sneering Germans and raging explosions.
World of Tanks: Roll Out doesn’t just focus on one group over another instead it evenly tells the story between the Germans and the British as they fight for territory in war-torn Europe. Taking place 30 days after D-Day it shows the coming ashore of B Squadron commanded by Second Lieutenant Simon Linnet. As they come off the beach they see the wreckage of a few German tanks — the remnants of a failed attack on Normandy beach. Lying in wait is a squad of German Panther tanks that were cut off in the failed attack and have been undergoing maintenance. Lead by the imposing Hauptmann Karl Kraft he knows that more British forces will be coming soon and he needs to have his tanks operational.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “D Plus Thirty”, An untested British crew inadvertently commands an unconventional Cromwell tank into France while hunted by a hardened German panzer unit.
Sixth July, 1944: An untested British crew commanded by Second Lieutenant Simon Linnet, arrives in Normandy to join the Allied Armies. Their training and resolve are tested when they cross paths with the Panthers of Panzerabteilung 130…
Next in issue #2, “Snakebite”, After an attack on the German panzers goes awry, the British crew of the Snakebite discover there is something dangerously unique about their tank.
After coming face-to-face with the Panthers for the first time, Simon Linnet’s crew survives unscathed as Corporal Trevor Budd drives them right off the battlefield! While Linnet believes him to be guilty of insubordination, Budd insists there is something wrong with the tank…
Next in issue #3, ”Kindergarten”, In the war-torn countryside of Normandy, the battle continues to rage as Linnet’s crew experiences the tortures of war firsthand.
After the tank speeds right off the battlefield, Linnet and his men realize that Budd was right: Snakebite is a training tank! With its soft steel armor, the tank can’t protect them from heavy artillery – but it can get them out of trouble faster than any other tank available. Deciding to keep Snakebite, the men continue their trek into a seemingly deserted village…
Next in issue #4, “Gods of Battles”, In this exciting penultimate issue, Linnet’s crew faces their toughest battle yet! Meanwhile, Kraft’s confidence breaks down as he questions the goals of his fellow officers.
Linnet and his men have decided to continue on with their mission after discovering that Snakebite is a training tank. Although its light armor won’t protect them from heavy fire, its speed on the battlefield is enough to convince them to keep it. As they lead the charge into a village that’s under attack, will speed be enough?
Finally in issue #5, “We Are But Warriors for the Working Day”, In the explosive final issue, Linnet and Kraft’s crews finally come face to face. Who will survive the battle?
A rest stop in a quiet village turned into all-out warfare for Linnet and his tank crew when they encountered a German patrol. With Snakebite’s maneuverability, they were able to win the first foray. But will the Germans come back with reinforcements?
