Description
WW2: Eastern Front Hell #1 Comic
Writer: Ron Ledwell
Artist: Ron Ledwell
Cover by: Ron Ledwell
During the Second World War, Hitler’s attack on the Soviets slowly turned around into an unofficial retreat. Troops were moved rearward to new defensive positions where they could hope for reserves to come in and save them. Unfortunately, the “reserves” were what was left of other units just as badly hit and equipped as the ones they were sent to reinforce. By 1943, the German forces were being out-shot, out-equipped, and out-manned by their foes.
Another of Ron Ledwell’s classic tales of World War Two told in black-and-white. The technical details are accurate while the stories magnificently focus on the day-to-day lives of the people involved.
Story (Spoilers!)
“Rear Guard”, The 1943 Battle of Kharkov was the last of the German victories on the Eastern Front. After Kharkov the war became a series of rearward moves to new defensive positions where the Germans hoped to regroup and resume the offensive. Such was the official German high command “order of the day”. But most high-ranking officers knew that it was just a cover story for defeat. Hitler would not allow any real retreat and there were no more German reserves. What were called “reserves” were nothing more than German divisions that had been mauled in previous battles and pulled out of the line temporarily to be refitted – or else divisions that were rushed from one front to another to bolster another sagging part of the line. By 1943 the Germans were being outproduced in every type of armament – tanks, planes, guns, artillery, and ammo – as well as in human reinforcements. For the German soldiers on the Eastern Front the war was truly becoming a “Hell on Earth.”
