Germany’s Kriegsmarine’s U-boat arm was convinced the UK and its convoys could be defeated by new tactics, and tried to focus on convoy battles. U-boat tactics initially saw success in the Battle of the Atlantic, greatly disrupting Allied shipping.
February, 1941 and U-119 is on patrol off the East Coast of the United States, in Long Island Sound. World War II is only one month old and America is not prepared. The lights along the East Coast shine brightly, like a beacon to German U-Boats and they illuminate the tankers and freighters plying the coast.
Story (Spoilers!)
Issue #1, “The Happy Times”, Shortly after the beginning of America’s entry into WWII, German U-Boats were roaming almost at their leisure up and down the East Coast sinking ships, just about entirely unopposed. The Pacific War was drawing all the assets of the U.S. Navy and none could be spared for the Atlantic at this crucial time. But the “Sleeping Giant” of American industry had been awakened and soon American shipyards and factories would start churning out new ships and aircraft. For now, however, Hitler’s U-Boats ravaged American shipping, eagerly targeting freighters, oilers and other transports against a background of a well-illuminated East Coast shoreline. No wonder the Germans remember these days as “The Happy Times”…
