Charles Xavier devoted his life to bridging the gap of fear between humans and mutants. Himself a powerful telepath, he trained other mutants in the use of their powers, instilling in them a love for all people. For years, his X-Men have protected innocents from evil, mutant or not.
The twisted child called Legion uses his awesome powers to travel back in time and kill the young Xavier, and thus he completely changes the course of world history. A man who should have been a strong leader is now only a memory, and his dream of peaceful coexistence is all but forgotten. The powerful Apocalypse controls most of the world and imposes his brutal version of Darwinism on humans and mutants alike.
But dreams, unlike men, are hard to kill, and mutants still fight for freedom in Xavier’s name. Led by the enigmatic Magneto, once Charles’ greatest friend, this alternate version of the Uncanny X-Men struggles to defeat the ultimate evil mutant and end the Age of Apocalypse forever.
For four issues during Marvel’s 1995 “Age of Apocalypse” crossover, Excalibur ended, replaced by the alternate-reality “X-Calibre.” In this reality, Magneto is one of the good guys, and has recruited a swashbuckling version of Nightcrawler to help him seek out other mutants that might aid their cause. In particular, they seek the fabled land of Avalon, where the mutant Destiny holds the precognitive ability that may be the key to restoring reality and ending the Age of Apocalypse. Along the way, however, he’ll face powerful enemies, including this reality’s version of Angel, now a haughty nightclub owner of a crossroads bar called Heaven.
X-Calibre is a team built around Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner), who is sent by Magneto to locate Destiny (Irene Adler), a mutant capable of seeing into the future, so that she can verify Bishop’s story. Nightcrawler must travel to Avalon, a secret refuge where mutants and humans live together in peace. Along his journey, he encounters John Proudstar (Thunderbird), the monk Cain, the pirate Callisto, and his mother Mystique (Raven Darkholme). Nightcrawler’s team consists of Mystique, Switchback, and later Damask, who joins Nightcrawler after realizing the beauty Avalon has to offer. The chief antagonists for Nightcrawler’s journey consist of the Pale Riders, a trio of Apocalypse’s servants made up of Moonstar (Danielle Moonstar), Damask (Emma Steed), Dead Man Wade (Wade Wilson) and the Shadow King (Amahl Farouk).
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “The Infernal Gallop”, Switchback has arrived to the Antartica, as a leap of faith she almost gets to her destiny: Avalon, the promised land for Humans and Mutants, a real paradise to hide from Apocalypse. His escort, Cain, is a massive monk with few words to say. Meanwhile, Kurt Darkholme has embarked on a new mission set by Magneto, he must get entrance to the Infernal Gallop so he must meet his mother Mystique to embarck to Avalon and reach Destiny, the only mutant who can confirm Bishop´s story about another reality without Apocalypse´s carnage. During his travel Nightcrawler must go into different scales. The dark lord Apocalypse has learned about Darkholme´s quest so he sent the Pale Riders to follow him and destroy Avalon, this group is leading by Damask.
Next in issue #2, “Burn”, The Apocalypse is about to arrive to the paradise land of Avalon as it is what Destiny saw using her precognition powers. Meanwhile Nightcrawler is travelling in one of the refugee´s submarine but, as expected, nothing would be going easy on him. Hundreds of lifes at risk and the betrayal of a pirate.
Next in issue #3, “Body Heat”, Mother and son has reunited, the Darkholmes are arriving to Avalon, despite a reluctant Mystique. With them has come the assassins, known as pale riders, of Apocalypse and the final battle of Avalon has begun. Changing sides, death, assembling a team and the destruction of the paradise!
Finally in issue #4, “On Fire”, Having just killed Dead-Man Wade of the Pale Riders the members of X-Calibre must now deal with the Shadow King. The Shadow King was possessing mutants in Avalon and having them kill each other. X-Calibre devises a plan to have Nightcrawler teleport and have his entry port stay open long enough to draw in the Shadow King to kill him. They are in the process but it goes slightly wrong. When they draw him in, he releases a psionic blast of staggering proportions aimed at Destiny. He would have killed her save her adopted son, Douglas Ramsey, jumped in the way and took the hit, killing him. The Shadow King was also killed in the process. Now with her son dead Destiny decides to follow X-Calibre vowing to end Apocalypse’s reign and seeing him die.
