The X-Files is an American science fiction drama television series created by Chris Carter. The original television series aired from September 1993 to May 2002 on Fox. During its original run, the program spanned nine seasons, with 202 episodes. A short tenth season consisting of six episodes ran from January to February 2016. Following the ratings success of this revival, The X-Files returned for an eleventh season of ten episodes, which ran from January to March 2018. In addition to the television series, two feature films have been released: The 1998 film The X-Files and the stand-alone film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, released in 2008, six years after the original television run had ended. The X-Files was inspired by earlier television series which featured elements of suspense and speculative fiction, including The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Tales from the Darkside, Twin Peaks, and especially Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
The series revolves around Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who investigate the eponymous “X-Files”: marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder is a skilled criminal profiler, an ardent supernaturalist, and a conspiracy theorist who believes in the existence of the paranormal, whereas Scully is a medical doctor and a skeptic who has been assigned to scientifically analyze Mulder’s discoveries. Early in the series, both agents become pawns in a larger conflict and come to trust only each other and a few select people. The agents also discover an agenda of the government to keep secret the existence of extraterrestrial life. Mulder and Scully’s shared adventures lead them to develop a close platonic bond, which by series’ end develops into a romantic relationship. Roughly one third of the series’ episodes follow a complex story arc about a planned alien invasion, whereas the other two-thirds are “monster of the week” episodes that each focus on a one-off villain, mutant, or monster.
The show was the longest-running science fiction series in U.S. television history. Its success has since led to books, comics, films, television programs, video games, role-playing games, trading cards, action figures, puzzles, posters, portfolios, t-shirts, and so much more. The series has garnered a world-wide fan following and is considered a cult classic in science-fiction/horror television.
Now, IDW presents, The X-Files. Previously on the X-Files… For years, FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully toiled in the X-Files unit, a one-office division of the Bureau dealing with cases deemed unsolvable and related to unexplained phenomena. Eventually, both agents left the FBI and began new lives in peaceful anonymity. However, recent events prompted them to return to the Bureau and the X-Files.
Stories/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Active Shooter”, Up their return to the X-Files unit, FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are greeted by a horrific event, wherein an active shooter is mumbling about seeing something sounding almost religious-in-nature. The shooter is put down by police but passes on the visions to a woman. Can Mulder and Scully talk the woman down before she goes on a killing spree of her own?
Next in issue #2, “Días de los Muertos, Part 1”, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigate a bloody massacre that happened on a train. The only survivors are two young siblings, but the brother has gone missing…
Next in issue #3, “Días de los Muertos, Part 2”, A boy makes a deal with a dark entity and Fox Mulder encounters something completely otherworldly.
Next in issue #4, “Ishmael Part 1”, Agent Scully finds herself the target of a stalker, who also threatens to reveal a dark family secret that she’s even kept from her trusted partner Agent Mulder.
Next in issue #5, “Ishmael Part 2”, Someone from Scully’s past has returned, dredging up painful memories of a dark family secret. Plagued by nightmares and visions while trying to identify her stalker, Scully has flipped her vehicle and now lies injured on the roadside…
Next in issue #6, “Came Back Haunted Part 1”, A thwarted attack puts a community of refugees at risk, but when a connection to a recent mall shooting is found, Mulder and Scully must determine the cause of the violent outbreaks, why the government is covering it up, and just what the connection to old secrets they’d believed dead and buried really is.
Next in issue #7, “Came Back Haunted Part 2”, Scully discovers Mulder has disappeared, which seems to be good timing because they have been pulled off their current case involving an apparent terrorist plot. But where did Mulder go, and what will Scully do about the advances made by the new man in her life?
Next in issue #8, “Came Back Haunted Part 3”, In search of Mulder, Scully travels to Europe where each uncovers unpleasant secrets. And what connection does Firas Ben-Brahim have to both?
Next in issue #9, “Came Back Haunted Part 4”, Mulder finds himself deep in a haunted forest where he uncovers a conspiracy with strong ties to some old foes. Will Scully reach Mulder before he’s lost for good?
Next in issue #10, “Contrarians Part 1”, Mulder chances upon evidence that suggests the now-defunct Syndicate’s involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. Guest-starring the Cigarette Smoking Man and President Reagan!
Next in issue #11, “Contrarians, Part 2”, Mulder has been contacted by someone from his father’s past connected to the Iran-Contra scandal who somehow survived a firing squad ordered by the Cigarette Smoking Man. But the illegal arms deal wasn’t the reason Cigarette Smoking Man and Bill Mulder were in Nicaragua…
Next in issue #12, “Skinner Part 1”, Assistant Director Walter Skinner finally gets the spotlight! When a face from the past resurfaces, Skinner must confront painful memories of the Vietnam War in his effort to keep a dark secret from being exposed.
Next in issue #13, “Skinner Part 2”, In 1970, as a young Marine, Assistant Director Walter Skinner uncovered a mysterious amulet deep in the jungles of Vietnam. Now, the amulet has returned to him, bringing the ghosts of his past along with it…
Next in issue #14, “Resistance Part 1”, Scully receives an invitation from Firas Ben-Brahim after months of silence, and she soon discovers the dark secrets he’s been keeping from her… and the rest of the world.
Next in issue #15, “Resistance Part 2”, With newfound knowledge, Scully takes actions that find her on the wrong end of the law. Scully is soon placed under arrest. Mulder scrambles to exonerate her and considers all his options.
Next in issue #16, “Resistance Part 3”, With Scully under arrest, Mulder must partner with a hated enemy in order to bring down a corrupt official.
Finally in issue #17, “Resistance Part 4”, The final piece of the puzzle falls into place, threatening to send Mulder over the line, just as shadowy forces are revealed to have compromised the upper echelons of government.
