In the same vein as H. R. Giger’s Aliens / Xenomorphs, The Brood are a race of alien parasites that reproduce by implanting their eggs in others. The Brood are insectoids beings travelling through space to find hosts to infest with their spawn. They originated in another galaxy and have established nests on hundreds of worlds across the cosmos. They are an alien race thousands of years old… a great Brood society consisting of clans led by Queens, with the Empress Brood as the supreme leader. They aren’t just a savage alien race, they intentionally enjoy the suffering they cause to others, especially the terror their infection causes to their hosts.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “Day of Wrath – Part 1”, Young Hannah Connover is implanted with an egg from the Brood, an alien race that has ravaged humanity for years. After Jean Grey shares a nightmare with Hannah, the X-Men must save the Connover family from the strange effects of Hannah’s implantation. Have the X-Men underestimated the power of the Brood? Hannah Connover has been implanted with a Brood Queen egg for some time and has been performing acts of healing in her family’s traveling religious tent show. Jean Grey shares a nightmare with her and alerts Professor X to send the X-Men. The X-Men have a particular interest in saving her and her family because her father, Pastor William Connover is a husband rights activist. Meanwhile the Brood Empress sends her Brood assassins to kill Hannah. The X-Men arrive and Wolverine wants to kill Hannah, while Bishop postulates that she could change the Brood race’s ways since there were friendlier Brood in his time.
Features Wrap-A-Round Cover Art by Bryan Hitch & Paul Neary. Awesome!! (see 4th scan)
Finally in issue #2, “Day of Wrath – Part 2”, If the X-Men want to save Hannah Connover from an alien infection, they must defeat the Queen Brood! But Jean Grey has reservations about this strategy, and the X-Men decide to find another way to infiltrate the Brood. The X-Men continue their defense of Hannah Connover from the Brood Firstborn assassins onslaught. Hannah is beginning to turn into a Brood Queen, Wolverine wants to kill her but Cyclops convinces him not to. Hannah, suicidal, escapes the X-Men’s watch and a battle ensues between the Firstborn assassins and her own Brood offspring. The X-Men arrive too late and Hannah’s Brood is killed and Cannonball flies her to safety while the team fights off the Firstborn. Meanwhile Hannah’s husband, Reverend Connover is captured by Firstborns as bait. Hannah sensed this and turns into a full Brood Queen in order to save her husband. After a brief fight, Hannah reverts back to her human self horrified at what she had become. The Reverend tells her she would be forgiven and the Firstborn arrive prepared to finish her. The X-Men return and theorize that if Iceman froze Hannah, the Brood would believe her dead. Iceman turns Hannah into a popsicle and the remaining Firstborn retreat. The X-Men take Hannah, still in stasis, back to their mansion to find a cure for her, while her husband prays for her and the X-Men. Xavier says he will send her to Muir Isle for treatment.
