Description

Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper                                                                                      Comics Lot
Story by: Robert Bloch
Adapted by: Joe R. Lansdale & John L. Lansdale
Artist: Kevin Colden
Letterer: Robbie Robbins
Editors: Ted Adams & Chris Ryall
All Covers by: Kevin Colden

Robert Bloch’s short story “Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper” (published in Weird Tales in 1943) cast the Ripper as an eternal who must make human sacrifices to extend his immortality. It was adapted for both radio (in Stay Tuned for Terror) and television (as an episode of Thriller in 1961 written by Barré Lyndon). In the original short story Jack the Ripper is immortal and still at work mutilating victims. In the first act, Sir Guy Hollis introduces his theory about the Ripper to psychiatrist John Cormody. The psychiatrist thinks he is probably crazy but agrees to help Sir Guy investigate. The second act revolves around a Chicago dinner party in which Hollis scrutinizes the guests. And finally in the third act, the identity of the Ripper is revealed.

Now, IDW Publishing loosely adapts Robert Bloch’s 1943 short story “Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper” to comics for the first time. Updating Robert Bloch’s terrifying tale in classic pulp style by writers Joe R. Lansdale and John L. Lansdale and artist Kevin Colden, Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper brings a horror masterpiece to new life with twists, thrills and plenty of gore.

A strict interpretation would not adapt well to the comic medium, so the Lansdales make two significant changes to the plot. One, they introduce a third viewpoint character, a newspaperwoman named Jenny Davis. Instead of going to dinner parties to find suspects, she and Sir Guy chase the ripper around WWII-era Chicago as he commits his crimes. Second, Jack the Ripper is depicted as a supernatural ghoul who climbs walls, leaps buildings, and is impervious to bullets. In order to maintain the integrity of Bloch’s original ending, it is eventually revealed the ghoul is in fact a golem that acts in accordance with the human Ripper’s wishes.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, World War II-era Chicago is rocked by a series of bloody and gruesome mutilations. No one knows who could be behind such carnage, until a young reporter and a determined detective stumble upon a series of occult clues. Clues that lead straight to the infamous Jack the Ripper! Yet how can the notorious serial killer from the Victorian London be stalking the streets of 1940s Chicago? Will our heroes be cunning enough to stop the murders and avoid a deadly fate themselves?

Next in issue #2, Detective, Sir Guy Hollis and young reporter, Jenny Davis close in on their search for the Ripper even as he draws them into his own horrific web of murders.

Finally in issue #3, Sir Guy Hollis and Jenny Davis close in on Jack the Ripper, he’s preparing to make a final, lethal move to shake their pursuit once and for all! Robert Bloch’s harrowing tale reaches its inevitable, horrifying finale!
