Astro-Boy, the robot kid with the heart of gold, was one of the first generation of Japanese anime characters to gain popularity in the United States, debuting (along with Speed Racer) in 1964. It is no exaggeration to say that Astro-Boy enjoys superstar status in the Japanese comic world, and was a natural to help lead the first wave of manga titles to see print in the U.S. in the late 1980s. Now Comics gives Astro-Boy a well-packaged showcase, with colorful, open, kid-friendly art and storytelling from writer Michael Dimpsey, and illustrators Ken Steacy and Rodney Dunn.

Astro-Boy inhabits a future world where robots are common, but treated as second-class citizens. Created as a child-surrogate by a slightly megalomaniacal mad scientist, Astro-Boy has the innocence of a little boy but the powers of a fighting machine.

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, Devastated by the death of his son, scientist Dr. Boynton builds a robot in his image, with special powers and his own personality: Astro Boy.

Next in issue #2, Astro Boy meets Spud and I.Q. Plenty for the first time, and battles a cybershark; he gets more hints about his origins.

Next in issue #3, Astro Boy learns about the tragedy in Dr. Boyntons past; meanwhile, he battles the military, which wants him for reasons he doesn’t understand.

Next in issue #4, Dr. Boynton sells Astro Boy to a robot circus, after implanting him with Bruno, a bomb in the shape of a robot spider.

Next in issue #5, Cacciatore forces Astro Boy to fight the other robots in the circus, but Astro Boy finds a friend in fellow robot Simon.

Next in issue #6, Simon tells Astro Boy about the Cybot Revolution and asks him to lead a new robot revolution on Earth.

Next in issue #7, Simon helps Astro Boy escape from the sinister robot Bruno, but pays the ultimate price.

Next in issue #8, Astro Boy tries to keep the robot revolution from becoming an all-out war, but meanwhile Boynton finally flips his lid.

Next in issue #9, Astro Boy deals with the aftermath of the robot circus and the robot rights movement.

Next in issue #10, Astro Boy must unite the police, the military and the rebel robots to face a Cybersharknado.

Next in issue #11, Astro Boy faces protestors on his first day at school, so he tells them his whole sad story.

Next in issue #12, A robot named Megathreat kidnaps a boy from Astro’s school in order to lure him into a deadly battle.

Next in issue #13, A familiar-looking superhero named Mutex the Mutant Marvel is tricked into battle with Astro Boy.

Next in issue #14, Astro Boy battles dinosaurs and reads a bedtime story to Astro Girl.

Next in issue #15, Astro Boy and Astro Girl discover that aliens are behind the dinosaur invasion, of course.

Next in issue #16, The military sends Astro Boy into space to investigate a series of rocket vanishings, but Astro Girl and his other friends have stowed away on the same rocket.

Next in issue #17, In space, Astro Boy confronts the Cybots, rebel robots who fled Earth to start their own planet.

Next in issue #18, While I.Q. Plenty and the shuttle crew try to repair Astro, King Cosmo and the Cybots are moved by his words and his sacrifice.

Next in issue #19, Rebuilt and returned to Earth, Astro Boy gets a new look and a new assignment.

Finally in issue #20, Astro Boy sets out to protect an important historical conference from a mysterious attacker.
