Now IDW presents, the most important “lost” tale of the Star Trek saga to be told: The final mission of the original Starship Enterprise and her crew. What prompts Mr. Spock and Doctor McCoy to retire from Starfleet? What earns Kirk his promotion to Admiral? And what is the mystery of Archenar-IV that threatens to tear the Federation itself apart? All will be revealed in this five-issue miniseries, with appearances by fan-favorite characters, Gary Mitchell, Lee Kelso, and Dr. Piper in this special opening chapter. From the first issue at the very beginning of The Original Series to the tail end of their five-year mission.
Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, The USS Enterprise’s (NCC-1701) final mission begins with what appears to be a flashback to an early mission during the five-year voyage. It’s stardate 1136.2, the Enterprise is part of a First Contact mission with the spiders of Archernar IV, and as Kirk states in his Captain’s Log, “I look forward to this mission… for the opportunity to observe the Enterprise crew in action. We’ll be out here for the next five years together.” From where the story begins – First Contact, flashing back to the beginning of things, to where the story ends, a tale the spider civilization as relates to the Federation in the future… with the original crew of the Enterprise in the middle of the mix!
Next in issue #2, The Enterprise’s last voyage continues with murder at the Federation Council and a deadly spy aboard Kirk’s ship. Plus, we give you McCoy’s final mission, the most powerful weapon in the known galaxy, the start of a worldwide alien revolution, a new romance for Captain Kirk, and an appearance by Sarek of Vulcan, too. It’s been four and a half years since the Enterprise first visited Archernar IV, and the spider-like creatures of that world are now petitioning for acceptance into the ranks of the Federation. After their presentation to the council, the envoy finds himself partaking in some intrigue with a couple of Humans, who, by their words, appear to belong to Section 31 (or its predecessor), a group last seen in DC Fontana’s “Year Four: Enterprise Experiment” series. We then jump forward about six months as the Enterprise has picked up now-Ambassador Cassady and is visiting the Arachernar IV for the Federation treaty ceremony.
Next in issue #3, The final mission of the Enterprise continues as the crew is caught in the middle of two bloody civil wars. With the Enterprise damaged, and everyone fighting for control of the Heart of God-the most powerful weapon in the known galaxy-will Kirk and Spock have the time to give their lost friend Doctor McCoy the memorial service he deserves? McCoy and Chekov have been captured by giant millipedes, Kirk and Spock are trying to find out why the spider creatures are acting so strangely, and the Federation is insisting that things get sorted out quickly for a new member. We Left off with McCoy and Chekov being split from the rest of the Enterprise crew and lost in the jungles of Archeirnar IV. Elsewhere on the planet, Kirk, Spock, and Cassady are going through a funeral service for the officers lost in the destruction in the last issue. It turns out that the creatures that have captured McCoy and Chekov turn out to be intelligent, more so than previously thought. The two quickly revert to their natural instincts and McCoy tends to some injuries as they discover that the creatures worship machine parts – parts of the Machine of the Gods it seems. On the other side, the king spider continues to act oddly around Kirk and Spock. Finally, Kirk has a plan that is put into jeopardy almost as soon as he begins to implement.
Next in issue #4, With McCoy missing, Kirk unconscious, and the Enterprise badly damaged, Spock and Scotty must protect the Archernarian “Heart of God”—the most powerful weapon in the universe—from being stolen by Orion Pirates… all while civil war rages inside Archernar-IV. The fourth issue of “Mission’s End” picks up moments after the end of the last issue. Spock hovers over Kirk’s limp and unconscious body as the crawlers are attacking the spiders. In something of what appears to be an uprising or rebellion by the previously believed non-sentient crawlers, one of the pieces of the “Heart of God” is stolen and, despite being chased by a Federation shuttle, spirited away by the crawlers. Cassady finds herself the ranking Starfleet officer, and Spock turns to her for guidance, while pointing out the requirements of the Prime Directive. In the meantime, McCoy finds himself in a situation where he is forced to pull rank on the security detail assigned to his portion of the away mission. At the same time, Uhura has discovered strange communications from within the Enterprise, and Scotty and Sulu are forced to deal with the disturbance.
Finally in issue #5, This is it. The curtain comes down on the original five-year mission. Who will survive the Archernarian civil war? What finally drives Spock and McCoy out of Starfleet? And what happens when you take the most powerful weapon in the known universe… and actually set it off? Join Captain Kirk and the crew for the Final Mission of the USS Enterprise. You’ll kick yourself if you miss it. The fifth, and final, issue of “Mission’s End” leads off with Kirk trying to figure out what has gone wrong and how to salvage the situation. He does not know about the Orion Syndicate fleet faced by Scotty in the skies above, but he does have some ideas as to where to start, based on his past experiences on the planet, nearly five years previous. In fact, he starts off by locating McCoy to a very thankful “I was wondering when you were going to show up”. Kirk’s next step is figuring out how to resolve the situation without further bloodshed.
