Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas.  The film series began with Star Wars, released on May 25, 1977. This was followed by two sequels: The Empire Strikes Back, released on May 21, 1980, and Return of the Jedi, released on May 25, 1983. The more than two decades after the release of the original film, the series continued with a prequel trilogy; consisting of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999; Episode II: Attack of the Clones, released on May 16, 2002; and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005, Then Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released on December 18, 2015;  Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 18, 2017. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, released on December 18, 2017. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released on December 20, 2019.

In October 1993, Dark Horse Comics took us deeper into the Star Wars universe with Tales of the Jedi. The epic drama of Star Wars was said to have happened “long ago, in a galaxy far away.” In that same galaxy, but even longer ago, lies the tale of the Jedi Knights. That was a time of peace, forged by the vast confederation of star systems known as the Galactic Republic. The Galactic Republic was a democracy, famed for its wise and fair leadership. When danger threatened, it also could call on its protectors, the Jedi Knights. Against the Dark Side, these heroic warriors fought for the cause of good, using their lightsabers and the power of the Force.

Now… a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – Redemption! After the Sith War, Ulic Qel-Droma, the chief lieutenant of the Dark Lord of the Sith, was stripped of his Force-attuned Jedi abilities. As an outsider, no longer a true Jedi, he chose to isolate himself from all vestiges of his former life on the frozen world of Rhen Var. Ulic hopes to hide from his past, but circumstances—including the arrival at his fortress of the daughter of Nomi Sunrider, the woman blinded him to the Force—conspire to bring him back into the life he left behind. Vima Sunrider, Nomi’s daughter, wants to be a Jedi more than anything, and she wants to be taught by Ulic, the greatest of their number. Will Ulic make peace with his past and regain his faith in himself?

Story/Spoilers
In issue #1, “A Gathering of Jedi”, The time ten years after the devastating Sith War, which turned Jedi against Jedi and wreaked great destruction on the Republic. Exar Kun, the self-proclaimed Dark Lord of the Sith has been destroyed in his Massassi Temples on the jungle moon of Yavin. His chief lieutenant, Ulic Qel-Droma was stripped of his powers — blinded to the Force — Nomi Sunrider, after he killed his own brother Cay. Since that time, Ulic has isolated himself, wandering powerless and trying to hide from his past. He is a Jedi, and yet no longer a Jedi… Meanwhile, Nomi Sunrider, now a charismatic leader in the Republic and a spokesperson for the Jedi Knights, has called a great convocation, the first in a decade. She summons all the Jedi to Exis Station, an isolated space city which is the new home for many of the artifacts rescued from the destruction of Ossus. But galactic politics have no further meaning for Ulic. Keeping his identity secret, Ulic has commissioned Hoggon, a down-on-his-luck spacer, to take him to a quiet place where he can live out the rest of his days. He wishes only to hide from the Republic, become a hermit, and hope history will forget what he has done. Hoggon ferries him to the isolated moon of Yavin 4, without knowing Ulic’s own connection to the place…

Hoggon’s ship arrives in the Yavin system and makes its way to the surface. Hoggon tells Ulic of the events that happened there, but all Ulic can see is ghosts, including that of his dead brother, Cay. Ulic tells Hoggon that this place will not do as well. On Ryloth, many Twi’leks flee as a heat storm rages upon them, with Jedi Tott Doneeta doing what he can to help. He tries using the force to hold back the storm, but is overwhelmed, receiving burns across the side of his face. Rather then stay and rest his wounds, he announces that he must leave for the Great Jedi Convocation. On Exis Station, Master Thon arrives, meeting Vima Sunrider, now a teenager. The two are shortly interrupted by the Cathar Jedi Sylvar, and the two Jedi leave Vima to join the convocation that has begun. While Nomi speaks, Vima gets bored and decides to take off and try out flying a mining ship. But, while flying, Vima gets caught in a magnetic loop and has her ship disabled and is forced to eject. She is then rescued by a late arrival for the convocation, Tott Doneeta. Upon arriving back at the station, Nomi questions her daughter’s actions, asking how she can expect to become a Jedi with such brash choices. Vima responds by saying if Nomi would spend more time training her, she could have gotten out of it herself. Elsewhere, Hoggon’s ship arrives on the icy surface of Rhen Var. Upon landing, Ulic announces that he is satisfied with this place.

Next in issue #2, “The Search for Peace”, A decade after the horrors of the Sith War, the great Jedi Nomi Sunrider calls a convocation in the isolated solar mining facility Exis Station. Jedi Knights from across the galaxy gather to discuss the healing of their wounds and the rebuilding of the damaged Republic. All the great heroes arrive, including Master Thon, Sylvar, and even Tott Doneeta, recently injured in a terrible heat storm during a clan war on the Twi’lek homeworld of Ryloth. But Nomi Sunrider’s 14-year-old daughter Vima is not interested in meetings and speeches. She just wants to learn to be a Jedi herself, though her mother is always too busy with politics and business to spare time. Brash and bored, Vima steals one of the small sun-miner crafts and attempts to fly with a corona work crew, but finds herself trapped in the star’s magnetic storms. Tott Doneeta saves her and brings the girl back to Exis Station, where she faces Nomi Sunrider’s stern rebukes. Only one Jedi, blinded to the Force, does not attend the Exis Convocation — Ulic Qel-Droma, war criminal and grim wanderer. He has hired a scavenger, Hoggon, to find for him a place of peace, a place where he can avoid all contact with people, perhaps even a place to die, alone. Hoggon, a Jedi-phile and collector, does not know the identity of his passenger. After dropping Ulic off on the isolated, frozen ruins of Rhen Var, Hoggon rushes back to Exis Station in hopes of catching a glimpse of all those legendary Jedi Knights.

Hoggon arrives at Exis Station and takes a place in an airshaft to watch the convocation, as Sylvar has taken the chance to speak. She talks of Ulic Qel-Droma and mentions that he betrayed the Jedi and now wanders free. She makes reference to Ulic’s conspiring with Exar Kun, and the death of Jedi, including her mate Crado. She then states that Ulic is the greatest shame of the Jedi Knights. On Rhen Var, Ulic takes up his lightsaber, but cannot feel anything in the force. The weapon is nothing but a tool in his hands. The ground beneath him then gives way, dropping him into a hole. Back on Exis, Vima stares at two hologram’s belonging to her mother; one is Vima’s father, Andur, and the other is Ulic. Vima asks her mother about training, to which Nomi responds with “not today.” Vima then goes off to the docking bay, stowing away on a ship, intent on finding her own trainer. Also in the docking bay is Tott, who asks Sylvar to come with him to Ryloth, in order to deal with the anger within her. Upon arriving at the new city of Tott’s clan, the two Jedi are told of an attack on the clan by another clan. Tott leaves to deal with the situation and asks Sylvar to help while he is gone. Sylvar decides to try and rally the clan, telling them that they must attack and have revenge. Tott returns to announce that blood shed does not create peaces, and that a solution has been reached; the two clan leaders will go into the desert together and a new head-clan will join the tribes. Not used to the difference in custom, Sylvar asks to be taken home to Cathar. On Rhen Var, Ulic looks back on what he has done in the past; betraying Nomi and killing Cay. He considers this to be a place as good as any to die, but is urged to live on by an image of his deceased teacher, Master Arca Jeth. Ulic pulls his strength together and climbs back up through the snow. On Exis Station, Nomi finds her hologram of Ulic missing, and is told by Master Thon that Vima is missing. On his ship, Hoggon discovers that Vima has stowed away on his ship. Vima says she is looking for Ulic Qel-Droma, and show Hoggon the hologram. Hoggon takes her to Rhen Var and drops her on the planet, giving her a transmitter with which to contact him. After Hoggon leaves, Vima states that she will not leave until she is a Jedi.

Next in issue #3, “Homecoming”, Guilt-ridden, Ulic Qel-Droma hides from his past on the frozen world of Rhen Var. He still has his lightsaber, but none of his former powers. While excavating an ice-locked fortress, Ulic is buried in an avalanche. Dying, he receives a vision of his fallen Master Arca, which gives him the strength to survive. But as he drags himself hurt and alone to shelter, Ulic wonders why he should live at all… On Exis Station, Nomi Sunrider calls together the Jedi Knights to discuss the future of the Republic. One speaker, the bitter Cathar Sylvar, condemns the vanished war criminal Ulic Qel-Droma, who roams the galaxy, unpunished. The scavenger Hoggon, fascinated by anything relating to Jedi, finds a cozy hiding place where he can watch the convocation. Nomi’s young daughter Vima feels left out. Her mother is always too busy to train her as a Jedi. After hearing so much about Ulic and remembering him from her childhood, Vima decides to go in search of him. She stows away aboard Hoggon’s ship, letting the Force take her wherever it will… Sensing the simmering anger in Sylvar, Tott Doneeta invites her to join him in his cliff city on Ryloth. While there, Sylvar becomes embroiled in a Twi’lek clan war and nearly triggers the slaughter of an entire village, but Tott manages to stop the bloodshed in a peaceful way. Sylvar has too much fury inside of her and, ashamed, asks Tott to take her back to her homeworld… When Hoggon discovers Vima Sunrider on his ship, he is astounded to learn that the mysterious stranger he took to the Rhen Var is in fact Ulic himself. Vima convinces him to take her there. As Hoggan flies off, thrilled with the secret knowledge he has learned, Vima slogs up to the frozen fortress, hoping Ulic will welcome her…

Next in issue #4, “The Trials of a Jedi”, On the isolated, frozen world of Rhen Var, young Vima Sunrider enters the ice fortress in search of Ulic Qel-Droma. She calls out, hoping to find him, hoping he will teach her to become a Jedi. But when she finds the bitter, guilt-ridden man, he sees a vision of her mother, his beloved Nomi Sunrider. He refuses to train her, insists he is no longer a Jedi Knight, and turns her out into the snow. Vima wanders forlorn and lost through a growing blizzard, unaware of her danger, until Ulic rescues her. The two take shelter to wait out the storm…and Ulic gradually warms to the company, and tells Vima about his tragic days as a Jedi. Hoggon, the down-on-his-luck scavanger, has left Vima on the frozen world with Ulic, astonished by his brush with fame. Then Hoggon realizes that something unusual is going on. He rushes to Exis Station to tell Nomi where her daughter has gone. But the distraught woman refuses to hear him, and he is taken away. Meanwhile, the Twi’lek Jedi Tott Doneeta travels with a bitter and angry Sylvar to her Cathar homeworld, where she is received as a returning hero. She seeks out her old mentor, who tries to help her vanquish the ghosts in her mind. Sylvar decides to go out on a blood hunt, a Cathar ritual to hunt down dangerous prey and purge the inner violence and fury. Sylvar and Tott head off to a nest of destructive insectoid creatures, the Kiltik. Slipping inside, they attack the creatures – but Sylvar is utterly filled with violence and fury. She becomes a whirlwind of teeth, claws, and lightsaber. Appalled by the magnitude of her unleashed violence, Tott leaves her alone, telling Sylvar that she must find her own release, her own serenity. By herself, Sylvar seeks to calm the storm in her heart…

On Rhen Var, the powerless, exiled Jedi Ulic Qel-Droma continues to train Vima. Sylvar, the ferocious Cathar Jedi, has gone into isolation herself, directing all her anger and energy toward thoughts of revenge aimed at Ulic. But when a messenger comes to her campfire, informing her that Vima Sunrider has vanished, she rushes to offer Nomi any help she can give.

Finally in issue #5, “Master”, On Rhen Var, the powerless, exiled Jedi Ulic Qel-Droma continues to train Vima, the daughter of Nomi Sunrider. At last, Vima builds her own lightsaber and spars with Ulic, even though the grim man has been blinded to the Force. But he still remembers what it is to be a Jedi Knight, and reluctantly teaches her all that he knows. Sylvar, the ferocious Cathar Jedi, has gone into isolation herself, hunting and killing great beasts on the savannas of her homeworld. She has directed all of her anger and energy to thoughts of revenge, particularly aimed at Ulic and what she perceives as his part in her own misery. Sylvar kills monstrous animals, but is still unable to quench her inner rage. One night a messenger comes to her campfire, informing her that Vima Sunrider has vanished. She rushes to offer Nomi any help she can. On Exis Station, Nomi Sunrider has turned away the scavenger Hoggon and his news of Ulic’s whereabouts. Nomi realizes that she has neglected her daughter, and vows to bring her back, to train Vima as a Jedi. She heads off to Rhen Var, where she knows she will find Ulic. Hoggon, spurned, bumps into Sylvar on the station and offers his services to take her to where her enemy has gone to hide… Back on the frozen world, Ulic and Vima continue their training, unaware of the forces converging on them…

Nomi Sunrider travels to Rhen Var to find her daughter training with Ulic Qel-Droma. She tries to take Vima away but sees that she needs to make her own decisions. Sylvar also arrives on Rhen Var seeking to kill Ulic for killing her mate. But while fighting Ulic she comes to understand that she needs to move beyond her anger over her mate’s death.
